WACO Leo Club Volunteers Assist in Tree PlantingWritten by Theresa Rose on April 30, 2015
By: Bev Conrad — As part of WACO 4+1 day, The Leo Club, sponsored by Teacher Carole Martins, put their muscles into action and were a terrific asset to the Tree Planting event held at West Park in Wayland on a blustery and chilly Friday, April 24th. The City of Wayland received a $900 Alliant Energy “Branching Out” grant to plant five (5) trees which included two hackberry, two linden, and one sunburst locust. Over the last several years, the city has been fortunate to team up with Trees Forever as part of the grant process and are extremely thankful for this wonderful program. Hannah Howard of Trees Forever provided insightful information and hands on techniques for proper tree planting to the volunteers and city staff. The volunteers enjoyed hearing about the benefits of trees to the environment, natural habitat and to our health. Howard also showed the student the larva from the deadly Emerald Ash Borer and explained how it has traveled along highway 34 due to people transporting firewood. Special thanks to all the volunteers, City of Wayland Staff and Hannah Howard of Trees Forever for their help! Take a walk around the West Park and enjoy the many trees growing, you’ll enjoy it!
