Top-ranked Mediapolis had just a little too much firepower and size for Mount Vernon. As a result, the Bullettes are still unbeaten and still in the running for their first state championship since the six-player days in 1973.

Andrea Larson scored 20 points, making 8 of 13 shots, and Mediapolis used a big second-half run to sideline unranked Mount Vernon 63-53 to start the Class 3A tournament.

Darby Massner added 15 points for the Bullettes (25-0), Ashley Hedges scored 11 and freshman Mackenzie Rogers had nine. Heidi Hillyard helped out with 11 rebounds and six points.

Mount Vernon, the 2010 Class 2A champion, kept pace with the potent Bullettes from the start and opened a 32-25 lead when Jacque Murray sank two free throws at the start of the second half.

But the Mustangs would not score for a while and Mediapolis rattled off 14 straight points to start a 20-4 run that Massner capped with a 3-pointer, putting the Bullettes up 45-36.

Mount Vernon (16-9) recovered well enough to get within four points, but Rogers answered with two free throws and a drive to the basket for a 51-43 lead — and that proved to be enough to keep the Mustangs at bay. Mediapolis shot 54 percent in the second half and finished with a 42-32 rebounding edge despite giving up 16 offensive rebounds.
