Mt. Pleasant high school girls track team won the Central College indoor meet Saturday at Pella. Panthers scored 70.5 points, Iowa City West was 2nd with 64. Kelsi Phipps won the 55 meter hurdles in 8.67 seconds, she also was 1st in the long jump at 16′. Mary Wester was shot put champ at 42′ 11″. Mt. Pleasant will open the outdoor season Tuesday at Iowa City West.
The MPHS boys track team was 7th at the Central College Indoor on Friday with 30 points, Pella won the event with 68 points. Zoom Gwamna had the best finish, he was 2ndin the long jump at 20′ 7″.
The Iowa Wesleyan College women’s basketball team got some good news Saturday. Coach Steve Williamson received word from Mediapolis Bullette standout Darby Massner that she wants to be a Lady Tiger. Darby led Mediapolis to a #1 ranking and undefeated regular season, her team made it to the semi finals of the state tournament where they fell to eventual state champion Nevada. Darby received numerous post season athletic and academic awards.
Iowa fell to Gonzaga in the men’s NCAA basketball tournament Sunday evening 87-68, Hawks end the year 22-12.
UNI also fell in the “Big Dance” to Louisville 66-53, Panthers end the year 31-4.
The Iowa women’s basketball team has moved into the women’s NCAA basketball tournament sweet 16. Hawks won at home against Miami of Florida Sunday 88-70, their next game will be against a talented Baylor team Friday in Oklahoma City.
The University of Iowa wrestling team finished 2nd in the team race at the NCAA wrestling nationals in St. Louis. Ohio State won the title with 102 points, Iowa had 84. The Hawks best finisher was Cory Clark who was 2nd at 133 pounds. Iowa State finished 14th in the team race with 39 points, they did have a champion at 197 pounds Kyven Gadson.
The 3rd Annual Mt. Pleasant Easter Weekend 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will be held on Saturday April 4th, 2015, at Cottrell Gym. 3rd-12th grade girls and boys divisions, open men and women divisions, and 35 and older men and women divisions are available. Cost is $60 per team, maximum of 4 players on each team, medals will be awarded for the 1st and 2nd places in each division. WACO Alumni we NEED YOU…The 3rd annual WACO vs. WMU alumni game is tentatively scheduled for Friday, July 31st at 8p.m. This 2015 game will be held at the Winfield complex during Crooked Creek Days. Interested WACO Alumni should sign-up at www.alumnifootballusa.com. A minimum of 25 alumni athletes from each school are necessary for the game to be officially scheduled. Less than 25 signed up athletes will cause the game to be be cancelled. Alumni Football USA and WACO Alumni athletes have raised more than $5,000 to benefit WACO Athletics .
