Simon Estes brings his Roots & Wings Tour to the Sondheim Center, Sunday, May 17
Concert to feature Fairfield High School Choir sharing the stage with Simon Estes

Fairfield, Iowa – SIMON ESTES, internationally-acclaimed bass baritone, is the star of the stage at the world’s major opera houses, a regular guest at international festivals and now he brings his ROOTS & WINGS TOUR to the Sondheim Center featuring the Fairfield High School, Sunday, May 17 at 3 p.m.
Simon Estes will perform familiar selections from Broadway and opera, as well as inspirational songs and spirituals. The concert will close with Simon Estes and the combined choirs in a rousing performance of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
The Fairfield High School choir, under the direction of Zach Reiter, will perform a variety of selections. The men’s choir will sing “Fergus an’ Molly” by Vijay Singh; the women’s choir will sing “Psalm 23” by Z. Randall Stroope and Vox will sing “Untraveled Worlds” by Paul Halley.
The Roots and Wings tour celebrates Simon Estes’ connection to Iowa as a native son (Roots) and helps Iowa high school seniors fulfill their educational aspirations by awarding college scholarships and also providing performance experience through the Simon Estes Foundation (Wings).
Estes, a native of Centerville and graduate of the University of Iowa and the Julliard School, will incorporate educational elements in his stop in Fairfield. He will share his story and steps to success with FHS high school students on Monday, May 18 at 9 a.m.
Joining Simon Estes as part of the performance is Leah McIntire-Barnett, soprano. Leah McIntire-Barnett has won accolades as both a cellist and soprano, and has been awarded state, regional, and national titles in various vocal competitions. She has appeared in numerous master classes with various artists, including Cheryl Studer, Judith Haddon, and Simon Estes; she has also been featured in several performances with Simon Estes. McIntire-Barnett earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Voice and Cello from Drake University in the spring of 2012.
The Simon Estes Foundation’s Roots & Wings Tour is made possible in part by support from the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. The performance is sponsored in part by the Fairfield Concert Association.
