MP School Board MeetingWritten by Theresa Rose on February 12, 2019
The Mount Pleasant School Board met in regular session Monday night. The board approved a cooperative agreement for Mt. Pleasant student Will Davis to join the Burlington High School swimming program at a cost to the district of $500 dollars.
High School principal Todd Liechty informed the board that four candidates for the Ag instructor position were interviewed this past Saturday. Three will be ISU graduates in May and one will graduate from Northwest Missouri. Liechty said all four are quality candidates. He will inform the board and the superintendent when he reaches a decision.
Six snow days and 12 late starts…so far will change the Mount Pleasant school calendar. Supt. John Henriksen discussed the situation with the school board. He said if the snow days were added to the end of the school year then students would be going to class until June 7. But the 6 days that were cancelled isn’t the only time that has to be considered. The late start hours are adding up and could add instructional time into the week of June 10. Henriksen suggested using April 22 and May 10 as make up days. One is a vacation day following the Easter break. May 10 is a teacher development day. School Board member Dave McCoid would rather have the students go longer in June than eliminate a professional day. And board member Jennifer Crull noted the buildings all have air conditioning now so classes in June wouldn’t be a problem. The board will make a decision at the next board meeting. And winter isn’t over yet.
