Lois Jean (Burkhart) Russell

Lois Jean (Burkhart) Russell, age 90 of Gladstone, Illinois died at 2:31 a.m. Sunday May 3, 2015 at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born November 6, 1924, the daughter of Fay J. and Ruby Painter Burkhart. On July 18, 1943, she married Delmar Briscoe Russell in Dallas City, Illinois. He preceded her in death on May 2, 1998.

Mrs. Russell was Salutatorian of the 1942 graduating class of Dallas City High School. She then graduated from Gem City Business College in Quincy, Illinois. After graduation, and prior to her marriage, she worked at Camp Ellis, near Macomb, Illinois. Later, she worked for the LaHarpe Creamery, Gladstone Grain Company, Gulfport River Terminal, and sold Pioneer Seed Corn as well as being a full time mother and homemaker.

She enjoyed knitting, and made many baby blankets for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved vegetable and flower gardening, and solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She also enjoyed playing cards with family, friends and neighbors, and belonged to many clubs. She was a member of the Gladstone United Methodist Church, Order Of The Eastern Star, and the Red Hat Club.

Survivors include three sons, Fay (Suzanne) Russell and Gail (Diane) Russell, both of Biggsville, IL, Larry (Pat) Russell of Gladstone, IL, four daughters, Delma (Nick) Plackett of Galesburg, IL, Nancy (Larry) Gapen of Carman, IL, Janet (Lloyd) Russell-Jacobs of NewLondon, IA, Harriet Russell of Stronghurst, IL, eighteen grandchildren, and twenty nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, Betty Shaw, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The funeral service for Mrs. Russell will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday May 8, 2015 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Jon Warren officiating. Burial will follow in the Carman Cemetery, Carman, IL. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Banks & Beals, where the family will be present from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Memorials have been established for the Gladstone United Methodist Church, Gladstone Ambulance Service, Gladstone Fire Department, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
