Keith A. Smith, 91, of rural Douds died at 2:30 PM Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at University Hospital, Iowa City. He was born August 19, 1923 in rural Douds to Kermit A. and Ruth Nedrow Smith and married Marilyn Rose Gire December 26, 1948 at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Douds.

Keith graduated from Douds High School with the class of 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In the navy he traveled around the world and visited many foreign ports. While still in the Navy he purchased the farm on Highway 16 east of Douds where he and Marilyn lived their married life. In addition to farming he was a self-employed rock trucker hauling rock from Douds Stone and other quarries all over southeast Iowa, worked at Golden Furrow Fertilizer Co., Eldon and drove a Van Buren Community school bus.

He was a faithful member of Christ United Methodist Church, John Hyson Reneker Post No. 494, American Legion and Douds Community Club and had served on Van Buren Community School Board.

Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Anita Joy Miller (David) of Wyoming, IL, two sons, Kendall Smith who lived with his parents and assisted them in their later years and Dennis Smith (Cheryl) of Bettendorf, four grandchildren, Amy Watkins, Abby Rostetter, and Justin and Regan Smith and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Warner and a brother, Murl Smith.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday, June 5, 2015 at Christ United Methodist Church, Douds Rev. Mark Young officiating. Visitation will open at 2 P.M. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home, Douds with family present 5-7 P.M. Burial with military honors by John Hyson Reneker Post will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Highway 16 east, Douds, across the road from the Smith home. Memorials to Christ United Methodist Church, John Hyson Reneker Legion Post or Zion Lutheran Cemetery may be left at the funeral home or church or mailed to the family at 15817 Highway 16, Douds, IA 52551.
