June 30 School Vote

Tuesday morning Henry County Auditor Shelly Barber shared a brief explanation of the Mt. Pleasant School district special election coming up June 30. The vote is not to change the sales tax that generates revenue for the district. That has been set by the state and doesn’t sunset until 2029. However, the school district purpose statement directing the use of that revenue sunsets in 2022. The vote is basically to change that statement to allow the school board to bond against that revenue thru 2029. There are those who are concerned this could financially strap the school district in the future. The sales tax is dependent on the economy and is not always a predictable number. Plus, the legislature could make changes down the road that would adversely affect the situation.
