Iowa Wesleyan College announces Belle Babb Mansfield Symposium schedule of events

Written by Theresa Rose on March 16, 2015

Iowa Wesleyan College will host the Belle Babb Mansfield Symposium March 26, 2015. This signature event honors the legacy of Arabella “Belle” Babb Mansfield, one of IWC’s most notable alumna, and this year celebrates the significant impact women play in the business world. Arabella (Belle) Babb Mansfield graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1866. The following year she began studying law with her brother at his law office in Mount Pleasant, and in 1869 Belle sat for the bar exam and became the first woman licensed to practice law in the United States. Belle never practiced law in the traditional sense. Instead, she enjoyed a long and successful career as an educator, public orator, world traveler, art historian and journalist. The Belle Babb Mansfield Symposium pays homage to her legacy of achievement and the impact of women in Iowa Wesleyan’s past, present and future.
Diane Crookham-Johnson will deliver the keynote address. Diane Crookham-Johnson is a general practice attorney in Oskaloosa, Iowa. After 20+ plus years in the family business, Musco Corp., she left to attend law school and complete a life-long dream.

A believer that communities are only as strong as their citizens make them, Diane is committed to community volunteerism and leadership. She serves on boards and committees that enhance the quality of life for children and improve access to the legal system for everyone.
