Wastewater DischargeWritten by Theresa Rose on July 28, 2016
The city of Mount Pleasant in Henry County reported an ongoing wastewater discharge to DNR Wednesday afternoon.
The city discovered untreated wastewater entering a storm sewer while repairing a water line near 802 W. Washington St. About four to five gallons per minute of wastewater is flowing through the storm sewer to Saunders Branch, north of Washington Street.
The DNR recommends keeping children and pets away from the creek, especially in Saunders Park, until after repairs are complete.
The city expects to replace a pipe section to stop the discharge on Thursday.
The city is not sure when the discharge began, but suspect it may be related to construction activity over the last few years.
The DNR is monitoring repair work.
This appeared the other day during the Alliant Energy gas line repair along the north side of west Washington street by Schader’s used car lot. As they excavated they noticed water pooling. A leak in the sanitary sewer line. The City is required to call DNR if they find any type of sewage discharge. The city is also investigating whether there is a water line leak in the same area. City put a temp repair and Kinney is replacing this section hopefully today.
