The Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle accident Sunday morning around 11 am at the intersection of Highway 2 and 204th Avenue, about two miles east of Donnellson. The actual accident occurred in the early morning hours. Michael Washington of Fort Madison was traveling southbound on 204th Avenue near the stop sign intersection of Highway 2. The vehicle left the roadway then reentered the roadway, continuing on Highway 2 and then left the roadway again before entering a farm pond where the vehicle submerged. Washington died in the accident and was found in the vehicle when it was removed from the water.
The Mt. Pleasant Police Department responded to an accident Sunday as well. This one occurred around 9:45 am in the 900 block of East Washington Street. Martin Lunsford was traveling behind a vehicle driven by Victoria Roe, both vehicles heading east on the inside lane. Roe slowed down to make a left turn into a parking lot. Lunsford looked down and rear ended Roe’s vehicle. Lunsford was cited for failure to stop with assured clear distance.
