On May 30, 2016 at approximately 4:00a.m. deputies from the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed westbound in the 10100 block of Golf Course Rd. The vehicle, a 2002 Nissan Sentra, lost control as it entered a curve in the road. The vehicle slid sideways over the curb to the north and eventually came to rest in the pond located at Flint Hills Golf Course, hole #8. Deputies made contact with the driver and he was identified as 17 year old Leshawn Michael Wilson of Burlington, Iowa. It was determined that Wilson was the lone occupant of the vehicle. Wilson was able to exit the vehicle and make it safely back to land just prior to the vehicle becoming fully submerged in the water. Wilson suffered only minor injuries from the accident and was checked at the scene by Burlington Fire / EMS personnel. Deputies were also assisted on scene by the Burlington Police Department. An investigation into the accident led to Wilson being charged with Operating While Intoxicated 1st Offense and Failure to Maintain Control of Vehicle. Wilson was released to a Parent.
