STEM Academy in Henry County

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach of Henry County will host a STEM Academy workshop series for the second year. The STEM Academy offers four age-specific opportunities this summer for hands-on learning for youth focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Topics include biotechnology, energy, life science, cooking, and more.
Grades K-3 are invited to explore “The Science of Cooking” on June 4th, from 9am -3pm as we explore the kitchen and throw meat! Camp will be held at the Henry County Extension Office.
Help solve the cookie mystery, make a rainbow in a jar, and there might even be an exploding marshmallow! Beverage and snacks will be provided, but campers will need to bring a sack lunch. The cost for this camp is $20.
Grades K-3 can explore aquatic & reptilian life on June 11th from 9am-3 pm. “Scales & Tails” camp will be held at the Log Cabin Shelter at Saunders Park.
Snakes, frogs, turtles, and lizards, o my! Come learn and explore the differences between reptiles and amphibians through skin, eggs, and more. Beverage and snacks will be provided, but campers will need to bring a sack lunch. The cost for this camp is $20
Grades 4-6 are invited to explore Energy with “Full of Energy” camp on June 18th from 9am-3pm as we harness the wind & cook with Solar Power! Camp will be held at the Log Cabin Shelter at Saunders Park.
This fun, interactive, science day will be spent learning about wind energy, windmills, and mechanical engineering. Beverage and snacks will be provided, but campers will need to bring a sack lunch. The cost for this camp is $30.
Grades 4-6 can experience Biotechnology first hand at “Biotech” camp June 24th from 9am-3pm as we extract our own DNA! Camp will be held at Henry County Extension.
Learn how to extract DNA from a banana, simulate the spread of infectious disease, and discover the mystery of the farmer’s boot while learning all about Biotechnology! Beverage and snacks will be provided, but campers will need to bring a sack lunch. The cost for this camp is $30

Pre-registration is required, deadline is one week prior to the camp. Workshops will also be offered in Lee, Des Moines, and Louisa counties as well.
