Stanley Widmer

A funeral service for Stanley A. Widmer, 78, of Wayland will be held Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 11AM at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church with Pastors Nathan and Rachelle Luitjen officiating. Following the service the body will be cremated and a private family burial will be held at a later date. Visitation with the family present will be held Wednesday, April 22, 2015 from 5 – 7 PM at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and Sugar Creek Cemetery. Stanley Widmer died Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City. Beatty Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Stanley Allen Widmer was born July 21, 1936 near Wayland, IA the son of Daniel George and Viola Esther (Wyse) Widmer. He graduated from Wayland High School in 1954 and from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1963 with a BA in Business and a minor in Psychology. Stan served in 1W from 1957 – 1958 at the Denver General Hospital in Denver, Colorado. He was united in marriage to Martha Ann Graber on September 24, 1967 in Wayland. Stan was a farmer, hog buyer, insurance salesman for Iowa Mennonite Mutual Aid for 35 years and MMA for 20 years, and raised turkeys. He was a lifelong member of Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and he enjoyed sports, especially the Cubs, his coffee club the “Round Table”, and most of all spending time with his family. He was known to his family and friends for his quick wit and humor.

Survivors include his wife Martha of Wayland, son Todd Michael (Marcia) Widmer and two grandchildren: Sadie and Claire Widmer of Iowa City, two brothers: Dale (Geraldine) Widmer of Mt. Pleasant and Wesley (Elizabeth) Widmer of Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers: Galen, Clayton, Clinton, George, Willard, and Blaine and one sister Vernelda Slagel.
