It’s going to be a busy day of sports action around the area.  Fairfield is hosting a cross country invitational and the Mt. Pleasant girl’s and boy’s teams middle school and high school will be competing.  The MPHS freshman-JV and varsity volleyball teams will be hosting Keokuk tonight in Panther Gymnasium.  AREA VOLLEYBALL MATCHUPS:  Van Buren @ Notre Dame, Cardinal @ Danville, Columbus Community @ IMS, Pekin @ Mediapolis, Waco @ New London, Wapello @ L&M, Washington @ Ft. The Iowa Wesleyan University Volleyball team opened up the 2016 season on the road against Knox College.  The Tigers went to four sets with the Prairie Fire, but came away with a 3-1 win to kick off the season.  The Tigers finished with nine service aces, while Knox recorded four on the night.  Cassandra Schwamborn had a team high 11 kills for IW.  Hannah Lien and Sydney Ellsworth each ended the night with six kills.  Cierra Howard recorded a team high 31 digs, while Katie Garcia and Schwamborn both had 12.  Maggie Earney finished with 31 assists in the win.  Iowa Wesleyan will be on the road this weekend. They will travel to Fulton, Missouri to face Fontbonne University and Westminster College at 12 pm and 2 pm respectively.

The Iowa Wesleyan women’s soccer team hosted Monmouth College last evening in their home opener.  The Tigers came into the game 0-1 after falling to Rockford University on September 1, 2016.  The Fighting Scots proved to be too much for the Tigers, and IW fell 19-0 for their second loss of the year.  The Tigers will return to action on Saturday, September 10, 2016.  They will travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to take on Mount Mary University for a 4 pm match.

The Iowa Wesleyan men’s soccer team traveled to Mount Vernon, Iowa to take on the Rams of Cornell College.  Iowa Wesleyan was able to get a goal late, but it was not enough as the Tigers suffered their second loss of the season with a 2-1 loss to Cornell.  Juan Carlos Franco scored the lone goal, his first of the season.  Edgar Vallejo was in the net for IW.  He finished the night with five saves on seven shots on goal.Iowa Wesleyan will take on Rockford University on Saturday, September 10th. They will travel to Rockford, Illinois for a 3 pm start time.

Tonight is opening night for the 2016 NFL season, a rematch of the Super Bowl “50” that saw the Denver Broncos get the best of the Carolina Panthers 24-10.  The two teams will meet tonight in Denver, with the Broncos starting a new era without Peyton Manning at quarterback.  Former Mt. Pleasant Panther and Iowa Hawkeye player Henry Krieger-Coble is on the practice squad for the Broncos, he was signed as a non-drafted free agent this summer and just recently signed a contract as a practice squad player.

The 1st night of district football action for Iowa High School teams is coming up Friday night.  Mt. Pleasant is in Class 3A District 5 and will host their arch rival Washington on Evans Field.  The Washington Demons racked up a school-record 664 yards of total offense during Washington’s 49-14 victory last Friday night over Mid Prairie.  Demon quarterback Ryan Reighard was a part of all seven touchdowns for Washington, throwing four touchdowns and running in three more. He accounted for 554 yards of total offense, rushing for a program best 296 yards and throwing for an additional 258 yards. Javionn Willis set records for receiving yards (143), receptions (11) ,and touchdowns (four).

KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will broadcast the varsity game beginning at 6:30 p.m. with pre-game shows, kickoff is at 7:30.  The freshman teams of the two schools will play at 5 p.m.

There are a number of fall activities to sign up for at the Mt. Pleasant Parkl and Rec Department:

  1. Youth Flag Football 1st-4th

This program is designed to teach boys and girls the basics of football in a fun and safe environment. All games are played on Saturday mornings at the East Lake Softball Complex. Volunteer Coaches Needed!!!

  1. Kindergarten Flag Football

This program is for boys and girls with introducing the skills and rules needed to play football. The participants move through drills working on passing/receiving, running, and defense. Equipment used is a nerf football, cones, and flags. Kids will recieve a team shirt. Can bring a water bottle.

Program will start September 13, 20, 27, and October 4 at the East Lake Softball Complex, field #3 from 5:30-6:15 pm. We are needing volunteer coaches to help out this year

  1. Panther Basketball Camp 3rd-6th

This camp will focus on the basic fundamentals used in the game of basketball. Campers will learns how to defend opponents and implement the offensive techniques necessary to become a scorer! This camp will be an introduction to the Youth Basketball Program starting in November! Camp will be instructed by the Mount Pleasant High School Head Coach, Paul Rundquist.

  1. Musical Motion Class Ages 3-5

Music! Music! Music! Sign up your little one for a sing a long and dance with Sarah Zihlman for 5 weeks. Sarah uses an assorment of musical instruments for your littles ones to have fun during class. Hurry in…we only have 10 spots left.

  1. Panther Cheerleading Camp K-5th

This camp offers the opportunity to develop the basic skills such as jumps, chants, and flexibilty exercises. Participants will practice 3 times before they perform at the Mount Pleasant High School Football game on October 14th against Fairfield. This camp will be instructed by Nikole Keaster, the Mount Pleasant high school head Cheer Coach.

K-1st will receive a pair of pom poms & 2nd-5th will recieve a giant pink hair bow.
