Iowa Wesleyan University hosted the University of Minnesota-Morris for homecoming and an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference match up, the Tigers fell 33-25. The Tigers also were recognizing 125 years of football during Saturday’s game.
The Cougars of Minnesota Morris were first to get on the scoreboard after a successful field goal attempt with 12:08 remaining in the first quarter. Iowa Wesleyan came up empty on their first three drives of the game, but they were able to take the lead after forcing and recovering a fumble to start their fourth drive of the game. Quarterback Caleb Huss found Jeremy Gomez for a 17 yard touchdown pass. Nick Fencl of Danville, hit the PAT to give the Tigers a 7-3 lead over the Cougars.
Iowa Wesleyan extended their lead to 10-7 after Nick Fencl hit a field goal. Minnesota Morris would score twice more before the half to take a 13-10 lead into the locker room. In the third quarter the Tigers recorded a touchdown Larry Jackson ran in from 19 yards out, once again, Fencl converted on the extra point attempt to give the Tigers a 17-13 lead.
The Cougars scored on their first two drives of the fourth quarter to go up 19-17 over the Tigers. Iowa Wesleyan answered with a touch down by Donnie Johnson III of Mt. Pleasant, and a successful two point conversion when Caleb Huss found Tylor Hoyle of Mt. Pleasant in the end zone. Minnesota Morris would not go away, and took a one point lead over the Tigers with 00:58 on the clock. Iowa Wesleyan had good starting field position after taking advantage of the Cougars kick off going out of bounds. Huss and the Tigers looked to get a drive going, but Huss’s pass was picked off and returned for a touchdown with 00:35 seconds remaining to seal the win.
The Tiger ground game was led by Bryson Oliver (FR/Aurora, IL), who had 59 yards rushing. Caleb Huss was 15-24 passing for 124 yards, but he had two interceptions on the day. Jeremy Gomez was the leading receiver for the Tigers with 6 receptions for 65 yards.
Defensively, Iowa Wesleyan was led by Nate Daniels (SR/Biggsville, IL) who had 13 tackles. Daniels had 5 tackles for a loss and also had 2 sacks. Eric Dubose (FR/Willowbrook, IL) and Christian Henricksen each had 6 tackles on the day.
Iowa Wesleyan will return to action on Saturday when they travel to the University of Northwestern (MN) for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
Iowa beat North Texas in Iowa City Saturday 62-16, Hawks play at Wisconsin Saturday. Iowa State and UNI were idle yesterday.
The MPHS volleyball team played at Burlington High School Saturday in a tournament. The Panthers fell in all five matches they played.
Unranked class 3A Mediapolis won the Southeast Iowa Super Conference volleyball tournament Saturday night with a 2 game sweep over #4 ranked class 1A Holy Trinity Catholic. 11th ranked New London beat Pekin in the consolation match.
