The Southeast Iowa Super Conference volleyball tournament was won by 10th ranked Mediapolis for the 2nd year in a row defeating #6 ranked Class 1A Holy Trinity Catholic 25-22, 25-15. Mediapolis is 17-3 and HTC is 20-1, In the 3rd place consolation match Burlington Notre Dame swept Highland.
The Iowa Wesleyan Tiger football team was on the road Saturday they took on fellow UMAC opponent Minnesota Morris. After falling behind in the first quarter, IW scored four unanswered touchdowns to take the lead. Minnesota Morris scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to regain the lead and secure a 28-27 win over the Tigers. The Tigers 1st score was put up by Jacquez Hall, and Nick Fencl added the extra point which brought the score to 14-7.
The second Tiger touchdown also was scored by Jacquez Hall this time the extra point was no good, Iowa Wesleyan trailed the Cougars 14-13. The Tigers took a 20-14 lead when Jeremy Gomez connected with Trinton Robinson on a 44 yard completion, Fencl added the PAT. In the 2nd half Omar Funches rushed for a two yard score and Nick Fencl kicked the point after to extend the Tiger lead to 27-14. Minnesota Morris cut the Tiger lead to 27-21 on the next drive and took the lead with 40 seconds remaining. The Tigers final drive started with 40 seconds to go in the game, and the drive ended with an interception by Minnesota Morris. Iowa Wesleyan will host the University of Northwestern (MN) this Saturday at 1 pm for Homecoming. The Tigers are now 1-3 overall and 1-2 in UMAC play.
The Iowa Wesleyan volleyball team played two conference games Saturday in Eureka, Illinois. The first match of the day paired the Tigers against Spalding who won all three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-18, and 26-24. Iowa Wesleyan had a quick turnaround as they had to play back to back matches on the day. The Tigers took on Eureka College and fell by scores of 25-15, 25-13, 27-25. On the day Cassandra Schwamborn recorded 19 kills and also tallied 24 digs, Maggie Earney finished the day with 37 assists, Cierra Howard ended the day with 23 digs against the Golden Eagles and 11 digs in the match against the Red Devils. The next match for the Tigers will be Wednesday, they will host Eureka College at 7 pm, Iowa Wesleyan is now 4-8 overall and 3-4 in SLIAC play this season.
Iowa Wesleyan’s women’s soccer team hosted Blackburn College Saturday afternoon. The match was the first of the conference contests this season for the Tigers who lost 9-1. Kassie Vazquez scored the Tiger goal. Iowa Wesleyan will be back in action on Thursday. They will travel to Cedar Rapids to take on Coe College for a 3 pm start. IW is now 0-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The Wesleyan men’s soccer team opened up St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at home Saturday against Blackburn College. The Beavers handed IW a 3-1 loss. Juan Carlos Franco scored for the Tigers who are now 1-7-1 overall. Their next match is Tuesday when they host Waldorf University at East Lake Park in a 3 pm start.
Mt. Pleasant chalked up a football homecoming victory Friday night over Ft. Madison by a score of 34-0. This week Mt. Pleasant will take their 2-3 overall record and 1-2 District 5 record to West Burlington-Notre Dame to play the Falcons who lost to Keokuk Friday night 24-20, turning the ball over to the Chiefs 6 times.
