Ottumwa defeated the Mt. Pleasant Middle School 7th grade in football yesterday at Ottumwa. In the MAROON game the Bulldogs won 16-14. Cooper Pullis and Brennen Bender scored touchdowns and Mitch Moothart caught a 2 point conversion pass. Brennen Bender rushed for 52 yards on 11 carries. Brevin Wilson was 4 for 10 passing for 35 yards, Brennan Bender caught 2 passes for 27 yards. Izaac Lance, Riley Sammons and Brennen Bender recovered fumbles. Top defensive players were Jack Johnson, Avery Scandridge and Brevin Wilson. The GOLD team lost 12-0. Olivia Larson rushed for 65 yards, Brian Huynh caught a pass, Tyson Sysouchanh recovered a fumble. Jaxon Glaha and Chase Adams were also leaders on defense.
MP 8th grade defeated Ottumwa 56-6 in the A game. Creighton Mitchell had 4 TDs on 159 total yards. Konner Peterson had 2 TDs; a rushing TD of 41 yds; and a receiving TD from Brody Bender of 54 yards. Rylan Seberg scored on a 47 yard interception; and Logan Bass also scored on a 40 yard interception. Brody Bender had 102 yards passing on the evening. Defense was led by Rylan Seberg with 7 tackles and Zach Venghaus with 5.
MP B-team tied Ottumwa in a scoreless game. Clayton Lowery had a 23 yard reception from Jacob Moffett. Defensively; Cole Keldgord led the team with 4 tackles. MP’s next game will be Tuesday at Fort Madison.
The Mt. Pleasant Panther volleyball team hosted 10th ranked Fairfield in Southeast Conference action last night. The Trojans swept 25-11, 25-18, 25-14. MPHS is now 8-18 on the year and their next action will be at home also this Saturday when they host a tournament. Fairfield won the freshman match 2-0, Mt. Pleasant JV team won in a 2-0 sweep. OTHER AREA VOLLEYBALL SCORES: Pekin 3 Waco 0, Cardinal of Eldon beat Notre Dame 3-2, West Burlington beat Danville 3-0, Davenport Central 3 Burlington 0, Ft. Madison 3 Keokuk 0, Wapello 3-0 over IMS, Winfield Mt. Union 3 Lone Tree 1, Highland 3 Columbus 0.
Iowa Wesleyan hosted Knox College in volleyball action. Each set was a battle between the teams with the biggest margin of victory being six points. The Tigers came out with a 3-2 win over Knox with set scores of 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 19-25, and 18-16.
MPHS Cross Country teams ran at Centerville last night the girls finishing 7th with 194 points, Ft. Madison won the class with a 34 score. The top finisher for M.P. was Delaney McDowell who ran 13th in a time of 22:23, Kelsey Notestein was 27th, Catherin Prough 40th, Ally Davis ran 55th and Megan Shumaker finished 58th. The 7th ranked Panther boys team won their class with 52 points. Logan Murray was the winner of the boy’s race in a time of 16:21, Adam Bodenham was 5th, Ryan Hutchison 11th, Dalton Krum 13th, Kyle Vanderham was 22nd, and Jonathan Ita 24th.
The Mt. Pleasant Panther Middle School boys and girls competed at Manhattan Golf Course in Centerville on October 6. The girls were 1st out of 9 complete teams. Panthers were led by Abby Ryon in 3rd place. Other top finishers were Kendall Dascher, Grace Kelley, Liz Perry, and Anna Ostby. The boys were 2nd out of 9 teams. Led by Drake Snavely, who was 12th. Other leaders were Nick McCormick, Heath Brooks, Tyler Raub, and Levi Mills.
This week the Mt. Pleasant Panther Football team celebrates homecoming. This week’s team meal will be breakfast at 6:45am at First United Methodist Church On Friday. Steve Davis of Davis Radiology is sponsoring this week’s meal that will be prepared by Hillary in the catering department of HyVee. The players, coaches and parents want to thank all of the businesses and individuals who are so supportive of the football team.
Major League Baseball playoffs began yesterday with wildcard action. The Houston Astros beat the New York Yankees in Houston last night 3-0, Astros now tangle with the Kansas City Royals in the 1st round of the American League playoffs. In the National League the Chicago Cubs play the Pirates in Pittsburgh tonight at 7 p.m.
Elmcrest Golf & Country Club in Cedar Rapids will be the host of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 4A State Golf Tournament, Friday and Saturday, October 9-10.
Elmcrest is the home course of Cedar Rapids native Zach Johnson, one of the top professionals on the PGA Tour.
The Burlington Greyhounds will be part of the State Tournament field after placing 2nd in the District Tuesday. Cedar Rapids Washington was 1st with a 307, Burlington 309 and Cedar Rapids Xavier qualified also with a 310.
