The Mt. Pleasant Panther boys’ cross country team has moved up to #2 in the state team rankings. M.P. has 3 runners ranked in the top 30, Logan Murray is #2, Cody Mertens is #22 and Adam Boddenham 27th. The MPHS girls’ cross country team has Abby Ryon ranked #18 individually and the Ft. Madison girls are ranked 9th as a team.
ON THE SPORTS SCENE TONIGHT: The Southeast Iowa Super Conference Cross Country meet will be held at The Burlington Regional RecPlex.
VOLLEYBALL: Notre Dame at Danville, L&M at Lone Tree, Mediapolis at IMS, New London at Holy Trinity Catholic, Van Buren-Harmony visits Central Lee, Waco at Cardinal, Wapello at Columbus Community. MacMurray College at Iowa Wesleyan University.
COLLEGE SOCCER: Iowa Wesleyan University at Fontbonne University in St. Louis for women’s and men’s soccer.
The United Small College Athletic Association released their Player of the Week honors yesterday. The Iowa Wesleyan football team had one member represented in the honor.
Jeremy Gomez was named USCAA Offensive Player of the Week for his play over the weekend. Gomez finished with six catches for 150 yards against the University of Northwestern. His longest reception was a 49 yard catch that gave the Tigers a first down and helped set up a touchdown for IW. Gomez also hauled in a 25 yard reception that opened up the scoring for the game and gave Iowa Wesleyan the lead against UNW.
The San Francisco Giants won the National League Wildcard game over the New York Mets 3-0. Starting Friday night at 8:15 p.m. The Cubs will host the Giants in the 1st game of the Playoffs.
Today and tonight the American League playoffs will have Toronto at Texas at 3:38 p.m. Boston plays at Cleveland tonight at 7:08 p.m.
It’s week 7 of the 2016 high school football season and the Mt. Pleasant Panthers have a 3-3 overall record and are 2-2 in the district which puts them in a 4 way tie for 3rd in the standings. The Panthers are still in the running for a post season playoff spot, but are in a must win situation for their last 3 games. The toughest of those games is tomorrow night when they travel to Solon to play the Spartans who have a 5-1 overall record and are a perfect 4-0 in the district. Solon’s only loss was to Iowa City Regina 34-0, a Class 1A team that has won 6 state titles in a row. They are led by a quarterback Blayze Griffis who completes 64% of his passes, has thrown for 10 touchdowns and has just 3 interceptions. His favorite receiver is Jacob Coons his tight end that is headed to the University of Iowa to play. Coons has caught 16 passes, 4 of them touchdowns. The Spartan defense prides themselves in creating turnovers, they have intercepted their opponents 7 times and grabbed 10 fumbles. The freshman teams of the two schools will play at 5 p.m. followed at 7:30 by the varsity game. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com beginning at 6:30 with our pregame show. The JV teams will battle in Mt. Pleasant Monday night at 6 p.m.
