High School volleyball action last night had Mt. Pleasant sweeping Keokuk on the Chiefs home court 3 sets to none. Mikayla Beason led the offense with 7 kills, Abbie Liechty added 6.  Jackie Fraise served up 3 aces.  Ashlee Menke had 21 assists and Kirsten Smith had 4 digs.  Mt. Pleasant ends the year with a 4-4 conference record and finishes 3rd in the league race.

6th ranked Class 1A Holy Trinity Catholic won their 76th consecutive Southern Division match and 9th straight title in the S.E. Iowa Super Conference, beating Burlington Notre Dame on their home court 3 games to 1 last night.

West Burlington beat Cardinal 3-1, #15 Pleasant Valley won in a sweep over Burlington, #12 Mediapolis won over Lone Tree in a sweep, Ft. Madison won the Southeast Conference title with a 3 set win over Washington, Winfield Mt. Union won 3-1 over Columbus Community.

Iowa Wesleyan hosted the University of Dubuque Tuesday evening in a non-conference matchup.  Wesleyan’s struggles continued as they dropped the match in three sets to the Spartans.

Iowa Wesleyan’s offensive attack was led by Cassandra Schwamborn. She recorded a team high seven kills, while Allegra Collette finished close behind with five kills on the night. Cierra Howard led the team with 13 digs in the set, and Maggie Earney had a team high 15 assists in the loss.

The Tigers will return to conference play this Friday. They will travel to Greenville, Illinois to take on Greenville College.  Iowa Wesleyan’s overall record is now 6-14 this season.

The Mt. Pleasant Middle School 7th grade football team Lost at  Ottumwa 20-0 last night  Dewon Trent lead the team in rushing. Josh Mueller lead the team in receiving.  Dylon Hagans executed an onside kick that was recovered by Tyler Gardner. Dewon Trent lead the team in tackles, followed by Levi Graber and Cooper Kelgord.

The Mt. Pleasant Middle School 8th grade football teams played Ottumwa yesterday.  The “A” team won 28-18, Jack Johnson threw a 57 yard touchdown pass to Chase Williamson.  Brevin Wilson threw a 72 yard TD pass to Jack Johnson and a 48 yarder to Mitchell Moothart.  Cooper Pullis ran in from 4 yards out for a score.  Moothart and Wilson also scored 2 point conversions.  Oscar Lopez, Avery Scandridge, Jack Schimmelphennig and Brevin Wilson led the defense.  The Panther “B” team lost to Ottumwa 14-0.  Both the “A” team and “B” team end the year 5-1.  Coaches Ronnie Ashton and Rocco Russo thank the parents and community for their support.

The New rankings are out for girls and boys high school cross country teams.  The Mt. Pleasant High School boys are ranked 3rd behind #1 Mt. Vernon-Lisbon and #2 Grinnell.  Senior Logan Murray is once again ranked #1 in the individual rankings, Cody Mertens a sophomore is ranked 18th.  On the girls side Abby Ryon of the MPHS team is ranked 17th, she is a freshman.

The Iowa Wesleyan women’s golf team competed in their final event of the fall season October 9-10th.  They participated in the William Penn Fall Classic and were one of thirteen teams in the field.  Iowa Wesleyan finished the two day event with a score of 952 through 36 holes.

The Tigers placed 13th in the field. Hannah Lien led IW in scoring for the tournament. She placed 62nd in the individual scoring after shooting a 190 through 36 holes. Darby Massner was the next best finisher for Iowa Wesleyan, recording a 242 in the two day event. Iowa Wesleyan is done competing for the 2016 fall season and will be back in action once the spring season kicks off.

The Iowa Wesleyan men’s golf team competed in the William Penn Fall Classic on Sunday, October 9th and Monday, October 10th.  The team score of 591 was 31 strokes over par and put IW in fifth place as a team.  Connor McLean led the Tigers with a total score of 143 through 36 holes putting  him in a tie for seventh place in individual scoring.  Bo Vitale was the next best finisher for the Tigers with a score of 147. He placed in a tie for 13th place.  Iowa Wesleyan has one more tournament left in the fall season. They will compete in the Viking Fall Classic on October 15, 2016.  The tournament will be at Fyre Lake Golf Course in Sherrard, Illinois.

West Burlington-Notre Dame head football coach Nick Breuer will be stepping down from that position at the end of this season.  He has been the head coach for 3 years, he teaches middle school exercise science. Breuer says he wants to spend more time with his family and move closer to the Dubuque area.
