The 2016 State Coed Track Meet is over, let’s review some highlights of area athletes and teams. The MPHS girls did not score any points at the state meet but did achieve some season best performances. They have some good talent returning and some good talent coming up from the middle school. The MPHS boys scored 11 points and finished 23rd, the shuttle hurdle relay team finished 3rd and Cori Fitten finished 4th in the discus to score the points. Panthers displayed strong depth all season and with a healthy Logan Murray could have a really good 2017. Bryce Achen of Waco brought home a gold medal in the 200 meter dash, great way to wrap up a stellar athletic career in high school. Carson McSorely of New London placed 4th in the 400 meter hurdles, she and the rest of the Tiger team will benefit from a track to practice on. WMU boys are losing a strong senior class of athletes, they return some good distance talent, and it would have been nice to see Garret Baker be able to run in the 100 and 4×100 but hamstring injury prevented that, 4×100 still was able to place 5th.
MPHS boys soccer team enters tournament play tonight, they travel to Keokuk to play the Chiefs on their pitch.
Now that the track season is over it’s time to put a different pair of spikes on. The Panther Baseball team opens at home Tuesday night when they host Davenport Assumption. The Panther softball team coming off a 1st ever state tournament appearance last summer will open at home Thursday when they host Central Lee in a JV-varsity double header.
Winfield-Mt. Union Coach Mitch Wachs’ team shot a 343 Friday in the District golf tournament and qualified for state. They were led by defending Class 1A Medalist Kaleb Hagge with a 77, Kolt Rossiter had an 80, Kash Rossiter shot 90, Darren Hunter 96, Dalton Spencer with a 108 and Graham Hagge had108. The State meet is at the American Legion Course in Marshalltown May 27th and 28th.
