The Mt. Pleasant High School girls’ tennis team competed in the IGHSAU Region 4, 1A Team Tennis Tournament Saturday in Fairfield.

Mt Pleasant  fell to Fairfield 5-2 to end the year with a final dual record of 4-5.

Singles:  #3  Afton Engberg

#6  Quin Whaley

In team tennis tournament play the match ends when one team wins five matches as Fairfield did. MP’s #2 doubles team of Meagan Sutherland/Kylie Sourwine had won their first set 6-1, and the MP #3 doubles team of Thuan Tran/Quin Whaley had won their first set 6-2.

Tran & Whaley finished the year undefeated at #3 doubles going 10-0, and were the Southeast Conference champions at #3 doubles.

 

West Liberty defeated the MPHS girls’ soccer team 4-3 in the finals match of the West Liberty tournament.

 

Mt. Pleasant had some girls’ and boys’ events added to the State Track Meet qualifier list by the IGHSAU and IAHSAA Friday.  The MPHS girls’ 4×400 relay was added, for the boys Kyle Vanderham was added to the 800 meter run field and Keegan Pullis to the discuss field.  WMU boys added Garret Baker in the 200 meters, John Quinn is now in the 3200 and 1600 events.  New London boys 4×200 will go to state also.  One  girl’s event from the county  schools added to the state qualifiers was the Waco 4×100 relay.

 

Winfield Mt. Union won the boys’ Class 1A Sectional golf tournament at Deerwood in New London Friday shooting 348, New London was 2nd 353 and Van Buren 3rd 369.  All three teams advance to District at Oskaloosa May 20th.  Medalist Honors went to WMU’s Kaleb Hagge 74, his teammate Kolt Rossiter shot 80, New London’s Justin Carter had an 83 and Wayne Briggs of Danville shot 86, they all will compete in medalist competition at District.

 

Pella defeated Mt. Pleasant in boys’ varsity soccer 5-1 on the East Lake Park pitch.

 

Danville-New London won the Southeast Iowa Super Conference boys’ soccer tournament at Central Lee Saturday.  The Bears beat Columbus Community/Winfield Mt. Union 1-0, after 2 overtimes they won the match on penalty kicks.

 

Logan Mulford who high jumps for Central College won the Iowa Conference high jump title at 6′ 7 1/2″, Central College won the team title, Mulford is a Mt. Pleasant High School graduate.

 

 

Former Mt.  Pleasant hurdler Cole Phillips placed 4th in the 110 high hurdles finals at the MVC championships in Indiana Sunday afternoon. Cole ran a personal best time of 14.27 and has qualified for the NCAA West regional round in Kansas in 2 weeks.

 

 

The Henry County Football camp is going to be held June 1st thru 3rd at the Maple Leaf Athletic Complex, it is open to students who will be entering grades 4 thru 6 in the fall of 2016.  With paid admission all campers will receive a camp T-Shirt,

Instruction and feedback.

This three day non-padded camp will focus on the technique that improves skill and

introduces young athletes to concepts of the sport.

Along with flexibility and speed training, all positions will be covered in the three day

camp, including special teams.

The Mt. Pleasant High School and Iowa Wesleyan University football staffs will be conducting the camp with the help from past and present high school and college players.  Cost is $35, registration forms are available at elementary schools and you can contact Shawn Striegel head coach at MPHS or Mike Richtman head coach of the IWU Tigers.
