The MPHS girls track team finished 3rd in the team race at the state qualifying meet they hosted, and advances numerous events onto the state track meet next week at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Thursday thru Saturday. Solon won the girl’s team title with 169 ½ points, Davenport Assumption was 2nd with 140 and MPHS piled up 136 points. 1st place finishers: Kelsi Phipps in the 100 meter hurdles in 14.93 and the 400 meter hurdles in 1:04.85. Kelsi was also part of the shuttle hurdle relay which ran a winning time of 1:04.89, also on that quartet is Sidney Taylor, Hannah Becker and Allison Buckert. The 4×100 relay team ran a winning time of 50.99 with Katie Ensminger, Hannah Becker, Kelsi Phipps and Danielle Coffin. Placing 2nd and qualifying for state were: Mary Wester in the discus and shot put, Kailey Peterson high jump, Hannah Becker in the 100 and 400 meter hurdle races. Several other events finishing 3rd,4th and 5th could also qualify for state, that determination should be known later today.
The MPHS boys track team won the district title with 175 points, defending state champion Solon was 2nd with 156. The Panthers have 10 events advancing onto next weeks state track championships. M.P. District champions: Ben Canby discus 162’ 10”, Cole Phillips in the 100 meter dash 11.17, and 200 meter dash 22.42. Logan Murray won the 3200 meter run 10:22.72 and the 1600 meter run 4:43.21. Spencer white won the 400 hurdles 56.99. The Panther shuttle hurdle relay placed 1st in a time of 57.50 with Spencer White, Brock Wilson, Jake Lowe and Cole Phillips. Runner up finishes that qualify for state: Logan Murrary 800 meters, Cole Phillips 110 high hurdles, 4 x 800 relay Zach Davis, Clyle Franklin, Jacob Holtkamp and Kyle Vanderham. Some other events may qualify and that determination will be coming later today.
The Class 2A state meet qualifier at Tipton saw Iowa City Regina win the team title in the girls competition with 109 points, Mediapolis was 4th with 78, West Burlington-Notre Dame 38. West Burlington-Notre Dame won the boys class with 171n points, Mediapolis was 4th with 71.
The Class 1A state qualifier was held at Waco. Pekin won both the girls and boys divisions. Girls with 172.5, Danville 2nd 97.5, WMU 3rd, Waco 5th and New London 8th 38.
Pekin boys scored 145, WMU 3rd 83, Waco 5th 58 and New London 31 for 8th.
The MPHS boys golf team ended their season with a 5th place finish at the 3A district golf tournament at Flint Hills course in Burlington. The winner was Mt. Vernon shooting a 312, Washington 2nd 345, MPHS 5th 348. Panther individual scores: William Kinney 85, Riley Kuempker and Beau Parkevich 87’s , Jeff Cox 89. Trevor Mabeus and Jordon Phomsouvandara 92’s.
Former Mt. Pleasant Panther and now a William Penn College golfer, Natalie Booton is participating in the NAIA Women’s National Golf Tournament in Savannah, Georgia this week as a member of her women’s Golf team. William Penn came in to the Tournament seeded 20th out of 27 teams who made Nationals. After three rounds of play William Penn has improved it’s seeding by moving in to 15th place overall. The top 17 teams advance to a final round being played today. Natalie has played a huge role in her team’s standings as her three round scores have been, Day 1 – 78 … Day 2 – 83 … and Thursday shot a 3rd round 4 over par 76. Natalie Booton has also been named an Academic All American in Golf.
MPHS girls soccer team downed Washington 4-0 and the boys soccer team beat the Demons 3-1.
The 9 team single elimination Southeast Iowa Super conference soccer tournament begins today. #1 seed Danville-New London will host Wapello. Other Friday matches has Notre Dame at Columbus Community, Central Lee at Highland and IMS at Holy Trinity Catholic. Saturday the semifinals and finals will be played at Highland.
ON THE LOCAL SPORTS SCENE TODAY: FRIDAY: Washington and Williamsburg play the MPHS girls golf team at MPGCC, MPHS boys soccer at Pella. SATURDAY: MPHS girls soccer at a tournament at West Liberty. MPHS girls tennis play in the regional tournament at Fairfield Maharishi.
The Mt. Pleasant Middle School Girls track teams traveled to Burlington for their conference meet on Monday, May 11, 2015.
7th grade placed second with 96 points behind Fairfield who scored 113 points.
