Shelby Allender, senior softball standout at Mt. Pleasant High School has signed a national letter of intent to attend William Penn College in Oskaloosa to play softball for the statesmen she was recruited to play shortstop. The MPHS softball team began practice yesterday. They anticipate over 40 players out for the upcoming season.
The Mt. Pleasant Community School District board of directors voted to have the Maple Leaf Complex running track resurfaced this summer. Midwest Tennis and Track Company of Denison, Iowa will do the work at a cost of just over $100,000, with the monies to pay for the work coming from the 1 cent sales tax. Work is being completed on the softball diamond fencing, the project was paid for the Mt. Pleasant and Iowa Wesleyan athletic booster clubs.
Mt. Pleasant finished 4th in the Southeast conference tennis tournament hosted by Keokuk Monday. The Ft. Madison won the event with 21 points, Keokuk was next with 17, Fairfield scored 13 and the Panthers scored 3. Afton Engberg was runner up in #5 singles for M.P.’s best finish.
Marion defeated the MPHS boy’s soccer team 2-0, Marion won the JV match 4-0.
The New London Tiger girl’s golf team won their 12th conference tournament under coach Greg Lerdal by a 20 stroke margin 374 to 394 over 2nd place Winfield Mt. Union Monday on the Sheaffer Course in Ft. Madison. Medalist was Grace Edwards of WMU shooting an 87, runnerup was Jorgi Krieger of New London with an 89 score. Columbus Community placed 3rd in the team scores 416, Notre Dame-West Burlington 4th with 417, L&M had a 418 total, Wapello 426, Mediapolis 445, Van Buren 504, Lone Tree 511.
The USCAA has announced their All-American and Academic All-American teams for the 2015 softball season. The Tigers had six members earn awards.
To be named to the USCAA National All-Academic Team, student-athletes had to have a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average. Caitlin O’Neill SO/Princeton, IA), Kassie Vazquez (SO/Ainsworth, IA), Samantha Shepard (SR/Wyanet, IL), and Skyler Rodgers (SO/St. Louis, MO) all were selected to the 2015 USCAA National All-Academic Team.
The USCAA also released the members of the 2015 Softball All-American Team. Iowa Wesleyan had three players receive All-American honors. Mikayla Dwyer(SR/Puyallup, WA) was selected as USCAA Second Team All-American First Baseman. Dwyer finished the year with a .347 batting average and drove in 20 runs. Samantha Shepard was also named Second Team All-American Utility for her play this season. Andrea Bury(SR/East Peoria, IL) was the final Tiger to earn All-American honors. Bury was selected as USCAA Honorable Mention All-American Third Baseman.
Samantha Shepard earned her third USCAA award at the championship banquet held in Akron, Ohio. Shepard was awarded the USCAA Softball Student-Athlete of the Year award. The award is given to a student-athlete who excels in the classroom and is involved in activities outside of their sport.

MPHS boys tennis team at Southeast Conference meet at Ft. Madison that was postponed from yesterday. THURSDAY: MPHS boy’s tennis district action at Davenport Assumption. MPHS boys golf sectional tournament at Flint Hills Course in Burlington against Clear Creek Amana, Ft. Madison, Keokuk, Mt. Vernon, Solon, Washington and West Burlington. MPHS girls and boys varsity track teams hosting the state qualifying meet at Maple Leaf Track at 4 p.m. teams competing are Davenport Assumption, Clear Creek Amana, Fairfield, Ft. Madison, Keokuk, Washington, Solon and Mt. Pleasant. MPHS girls soccer hosts Washington, MPHS girls tennis at Davis County. FRIDAY: Washington and Williamsburg play the MPHS girls golf team at MPGCC, MPHS boys soccer at Pella. SATURDAY: MPHS girls soccer at a tournament at West Liberty. MPHS girls tennis play in the regional tournament at Fairfield Maharishi.
On Saturday, June 13, the 2nd Alumni Football Game between Mt. Pleasant and Washington High School Alumni will be held on Evans Field at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex to benefit University of Iowa Children’s Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.
The event is organized by Alumni Football USA, and will consist of a full contact football game, as well as various fundraising activities. The majority of event fundraising
comes from the presale of tickets, which will be available May 9, 2015 at Browns Shoe Fit,
