MPHS boys track team competed in an indoor meet at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa Friday. Cole Phillips won the 60 meter hurdles and Spencer White was 3rd. Ben Canby was 2nd in the shot put 47’11 3/4”, Jackson Kelly was 3rd 45’4”. Zoom Gwamna finished 2nd in the long jump at 19’ 9”.

Head girls track coach Dave Hutchcroft is taking 21 girls up to the Dickinson   Relays today in Cedar Falls on the UNI indoor track tonight. As the MPHS girl’s track team heads into the 2015 season Assistant Coach Daryl Shy has announced he will retire at the end of the current school year. Coach Shy specializes in coaching the long jumpers and high jumpers for the Panthers.

IWC women beat Apprentice School 85-63 in the consolation game at the USCAA Womens National Basketball Tournament in Pennsylvania Friday.  1st team All American Karla Vietinghoff scored 22 points, Rachel Williams had 13, Breanna Hall 12, Lauren Grubb and Dakota Flesner scored 11 each.  The Tigers end the year 19-7.

The Tiger men’s basketball team played Florida National in their consolation game and lost 96-79 Friday night. Leading the Tigers in scoring was Chris Fowler with 20 points before fouling out, Marquis Jones scored 19 and Don Lightner added 13. The Tigers were cold on their 3 point shooting hitting only 3 of 23, Florida National hit 9 of 18- 3’s. Wesleyan ends the season with a 12 win 12 loss record.

The 2015 Iowa girls state basketball tournament wrapped up Saturday night.  Nevada won the 3A title over Pocahontas 58-54, Andrea Larson of Mediapolis was named to the All Tournament Team.  4A was won by Harlan again 56-46 over Western Dubuque, the Cyclones have now won 52 consecutive games.  Waukee is the 5A Champion, they defeated West Des Moines Valley 72-58. Newell Fonda won the 1A title Friday night, Taylor Hickey of Notre Dame was named to the All Tournament team. Class 2A was won by Unity Christian.
 
Men’s college basketball Saturday:  Iowa beat Northwestern 69-52, they end the regular season 21-10.  Iowa State beat TCU on the road 89-76, they are now 22-8.
The Iowa women fell to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament 91-85 in overtime.  Iowa State women fell to Oklahoma 67-58 in the Big 12 Tournament.

The Danville Bears put their undefeated 25-0 record and lofty ranking of #1 by Radio Iowa and #2 by Associated Press on the line this afternoon at 3:45 p.m. when they play 7th ranked Britt West Hancock in a Class 1A state quarterfinal game.  West Hancock has a record of 22-4 and are on a 4 game winning streak. Their 4 losses were to Class 2A State Tournament qualifier Forrest City twice, Lake Mills and Clarion.  They have attempted 642 3 point field goals and have made 202.  Danville has attempted 379 3 point field goals and made 142.  West Hancock is led by Trevor Nalan with 20, Nate Paulus and Connor Sonius average 18 each.  Danville counters with Connor Hoelzen and Mason Speer at 15 points each.  The winner goes to the semi finals on Thursday noon and then either onto the Frida night finals or the dreaded 10 a.m. Friday consolation game, KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry today’s game live.

During the boy’s state tournament week Mt. Pleasant High Schools Competition Cheer team performs during 2A action on Tuesday. Four dancers from MPHS will perform Friday three times on the All State Cheer Squad they are: Sidney Taylor, Jessie Sirivath, Claire Pickford and Allison Buckert 

The University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team captured the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship with a 69-60 victory over the Illinois State Redbirds at Scottrade Center. The Panthers were led in scoring by Seth Tuttle and Nate Buss, who each tallied 15 points. Tuttle also added nine rebounds and three assists.

 The University of Iowa wrestling team earned a share of the 2015 Big Ten Championship on Sunday afternoon inside St. John Arena. Iowa and Ohio State tied atop the team race with 120 points to share the title for just the sixth time in conference history and the first time in 83 years. The co-championship is the first for Iowa and the 35th Big Ten wrestling team title in school history. Iowa had 4 runners up and 4 consolation place winners.  All 8 of those wrestlers qualified for the Nationals in St. Louis March 19th thru 21st.

The 2015 registration for the Mt. Pleasant Girls Softball ages pre-K-12th grade will be held March 14th at Van Allen Elementary from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Registration forms are also available at www.mpsoftball.com.
