Iowa Wesleyan baseball was in action last night down in Jackson Mississippi for a single game with Belhaven University. The Tiger bats were quiet in a 7-1 loss to the Blazers. Belhaven scored three runs in the first inning and then four more runs over the next four innings. In the 3rd inning the Tigers were able to get runners on the corners and Minami Matsumoto hit a sacrifice fly to score Dominic Gerace as the lone Tiger run. Everett Swinson pitched 5.2 innings for Iowa Wesleyan, he struck out three batters while allowing four earned runs and takes the loss. Tigers are now 2-6-1 and will look to snap this 5 game losing streak today in Conway Arkansas against Hendrix College, first pitch is 6pm today.

 

Iowa Wesleyan softball had the day off yesterday in South Carolina but have a full slate of games today. Tigers start off with Immaculata University at 8:30am, then play SUNY-Poly at 12:30pm, and finish today against Franciscan University at 2:30pm. Iowa Wesleyan is off to a hot 4-2 start to the season.

 

Darby Massner from Iowa Wesleyan women’s basketball was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America NCAA Division III women’s basketball team. The team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Massner is one of two individuals to repeat this honor and she jumped up from third team to first team academic All-America. The team consists of 15 women who have an average of 3.88, first team members averaged a 3.97 GPA average. Massner is one of five honorees who have a perfect 4.0 GPA.

 

The St Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced the Winter All-Academic honorees and Iowa Wesleyan was well represented. Allie Massner and Darby Massner from the women’s basketball team were selected along with Jarryd Fernandes, Jake Neubauer, and Carter Jensen from the men’s basketball team.

 

The Senior Southeast Iowa All-Star Basketball Games are this Saturday March 16th. Taking place in Father Minett Gymnasium at Notre Dame High School in Burlington. The girls game will be played first at 5:15pm with a 3-point shooting contest at halftime. After that game there will be a dunk contest for the boys and the boys game will be begin at 7:15pm with a 3-point shooting contest at halftime. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced the 2019 state qualifying sites for track & field and for the second straight year Mt Pleasant will host a 3A qualifier. Other 3A sites include Benton Community, Carroll, Charles City, Dallas Center-Grimes, Gilbert, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, and West Delaware.

 

Coming up on Friday the Mt Pleasant varsity and JV boys track teams will be in Pella for an invitational taking place at Central College. This is the 2nd competition of the season as the team competed in the Dickson Relays last week in the UNI Dome.

 

On April 20th there is going to be a 3 on 3 basketball tournament taking place at Mt Pleasant Middle School. There are several age groups for male and female teams to compete in. Mt. Pleasant recreational softball will be holding a Skills Assessment on Sunday, March 17 at Cottrell Gym. They ask that all girls attend this to help the board assign teams as evenly as possible. 3rd & 4th graders will be from 5-6 pm and 5th-7th grade from 6-7 pm. This is also another opportunity to register your daughter. They are missing a lot of registrations, so make sure to get your paperwork in as soon as possible.

 

The regular season is over in college basketball and conference tournaments begins. Iowa is the #6 seed in the Big 10 tournament taking place at the United Center in Chicago. Hawkeyes are 21-10 overall and 10-10 in conference games but currently on a 4 game losing streak. They will play Illinois tonight at 8:30pm, pregame coverage at 7:30pm, depending how the games ahead of them go. Illini had to go to overtime to beat Northwestern last night 74-69. In the regular season the Hawkeyes won the only game with Illinois 95-71 back in January. The winner of this game will advance to play Michigan tomorrow night.

Iowa State is the #5 seed in the Big 12 tournament taking place at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. Cyclones are 20-11 on the season and 9-9 in conference games but currently on a 3 game losing streak. On Thursday they will play Baylor at 11:30am, pregame coverage at 10:30am. In the regular season Iowa State lost both games to the Bears, 73-70 at Waco and 73-69 in Ames. Winner of this game will play the winner of Kansas State and TCU tomorrow night.
