Iowa high school boys’ basketball is adding postseason drama by letting coaches go to the drawing board.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association’s board of control approved changes this week to allow coaches to meet and decide district, substate and state tournament seedings beginning in the 2016-17 season.

The new system will notify teams of their district and substate groups two weeks before an area school hosts a seeding meeting. The approved proposal from the basketball advisory committee allows coaches to sit down and rank their playoff opponents in-person, over the phone or online.

Classes 2A and 1A will have groups announced Jan. 20, 2017, then gather to pick postseason lots on Feb. 6. Classes 3A and 4A will go through the process one week later.
