Mt. Pleasant and Washington split a Southeast Conference softball double header in Mt. Pleasant last night.  M.P. took the 1st game 10-0, Bailey Johnson had a single, double and triple with 5 RBI’s to provide the offensive punch with winning pitcher Shelby Allender adding a home run.  In the 2nd game Washington won 8-7, Jena Stukerjurgen suffered the loss in the circle, Allison Buckert was 3-4 at the plate.  Julie Lasswell, Anni Liechty and Shelby Allender had 2 hits each.  The Panthers are 16-14 overall and 7-7 in the conference.  Today they play in the Iowa City tournament.

AREA SOFTBALL SCORES:  Burlington swept Clinton 7-3 and 15-0-Grayhound coach Larry Heath surpassed the 900 career win plateau with the two wins, his record is now 901 wins 734 losses.  #2 New London 6 Danville 0-Morgan Christner struck out 17 for the Tigers.  Van Buren 4 Central Lee 3, L&M 16 Columbus 6, Mediapolis 10 WMU 4.

 

Mt. Pleasant kept themselves in the title chase for the Southeast Conference baseball race with two wins at home last night over Washington 4-3 and 12-1.  Brady Anderson pitched the win in the 1st game, Ryan Moutrie and Tyler Davis had 2 hits each.  In the 2nd game Marcus Moothart pitched the win.  Levi Parkevich was 2 for 2, Austin Smith 3-3 and Pat Canby hit another grand slam homerun.  MPHS plays at Fairfield Monday to decide the conference title.

OTHER AREA BASEBALL SCORES:  Bettendorf twice over Burlington 4-3 and 3-2.  Danville beat New London 5-4, Mediapolis 5 WMU 2.  Fairfield swept Keokuk 10-0 and 11-9 in a double header and won the completion of a suspended game 9-7.  West Burlington downed Notre Dame 8-4.

 

ON THE LOCAL SPORTS SCENE:  FRIDAY:  MPHS softball at Tournament in Iowa City.  SATURDAY:  MPHS softball at Iowa City Tournament.

 

There is summer training runs underway for anyone interested in Cross Country. Everyone is welcome and middle school runners are also encouraged to join.

There will be morning runs every Monday and Wednesday at 630 AM at the Old Threshers Theatre Museum.

There will be evening runs every Tuesday and Thursday at 700 PM at the Saunders Park.

There will be a 100 Mile club for those who keep track and run at least 100 miles during the summer break.

The runs will vary in mileage for all levels of runners.

 

During the 4th of July holiday weekend there is two golf tournaments to play in at the Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club.  On the morning of July 5th there is a 2 person Ryder Cup format tourney at 8 a.m.  6 holes of best shot, 6 holes of best ball and 6 holes of alternate shot, cost is $50 per team and open to the public.  In the afternoon on July 5th at 2 p.m. there is a 4 couple alternating best shot tournament.  Entry fee is $80 per team and it’s open to the public.
