FROM THE IRIS BOWLING CENTER AND SPLITZ LOUNGE SPORTS DESK.

Class 4A  quarterfinal play highlighted the action at the State Baseball Championships in Des Moines Wednesday.  Three runs in the sixth inning helped Waukee to a 3-2 win over Johnston in the first quarterfinal.

It was a pitcher’s duel in the 2nd game of the day as the Cedar Rapids Prairie Hawks toppled the Davenport West Falcons, 1-0 to advance to the semifinals. Both teams combined for just seven hits in the entire game.
Cedar Rapids Prairie will face Waukee on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Principal Park.

The second-seeded Iowa City West Trojans topped the seventh-seeded Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawks 4-3 in a seventh-inning thriller Wednesday night in a Class 4A quarterfinal to advance to the semifinals. Jefferson scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 3-3. West loaded the bases and scored the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

The third-seeded Des Moines Roosevelt Roughriders cruised into the semifinals after topping the sixth-seeded Urbandale J-Hawks 11-3 Wednesday night thanks to a four-run fourth inning. John Swanda paced the Roughriders offense going 4-for-4 with three doubles, a triple and six RBI’s.

Roosevelt will tangle with Iowa City West in the semi-finals at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.

The top four seeds all won quarterfinal-round games, setting up today’s Class 1A semifinals. Top-ranked Newman Catholic is the top seed in the Class 1A state tournament. The Knights are a familiar face at state — Newman is making its ninth straight trip and 20th overall, they will play Remsen St. Mary’s at 11 a.m. this morning to open up semi-final action.  2nd ranked Don Bosco is back for the seventh time, they will be in the other semi at 1:30 p.m. against 3rd ranked  West Sioux who was in the state tournament last year also. Win streaks are common in the State Tourney field.  Remson St. Mary’s leads the 1A field, with a 20-game win streak. The Hawks have won 25 of their last 26 games. West Sioux has a 15-game streak and has won 18 of its last 19.  Mason City Newman has won 12 straight and 21 of its last 22. Don Bosco has won eight games in succession and 19 of its last 20.

A win-loss record can be deceiving. All five of Newman’s losses are to teams up in class. The Knights dropped three games to Class 3A teams and a pair to Class 4A clubs. Twenty-three of their games were against teams up in class. The last loss the Knights experienced at the hands of Class 1A team was the title game in 2014, when they lost to Twin Cedars. Of Don Bosco’s four losses, three have come to 4A teams and one to a 2A club.

Class 2A will have their semi-final games tonight, Top-seeded Clear Lake won the Class 3A state in 2013, and the 2A title last year. The Lions are back and headed to the semifinals. They are joined by Hinton, Pleasantville and Kuemper Catholic. This is the fifth trip for two-time title bearers Clear Lake, and Hinton has advanced for the third straight year, Clear Lake will play Hinton who knocked the Van Buren-Harmony Warriors out in the 1st round at 5 p.m. tonight.  Then Pleasantville and Carroll Kuemper will wrap up the evening with a 7:30 p.m. start.
