The Van Buren High School baseball team went into the State Baseball Tournament Saturday night as the #2 ranked team and the only undefeated team in the state. They left Principal Park Saturday night with their 1st loss of the season at the hands of a young North Linn Troy Mills team by a score of 6-3 in 8 innings. The warriors could only manage 6 hits off 8th grader winning pitcher Jake Hilmer of North Linn. He is the grandson of Bob Hilmer former Waco basketball coach and winningest boys basketball coach in Iowa history. Van Buren also committed 2 fielding errors that contributed to 3 unearned runs scored by the Lynx. North Linn picked up 9 hits and had 4 errors that proved to be not as costly as Van Buren’s. North Linn now moves to the semi finals Thursday at 1:30 p.m. against Pleasantville who beat West Sioux 5-4 in the earlier game Saturday night. Van Buren ends the year 29-1.
Southeast Iowa’s other State Tournament team Mediapolis plays in the 2A field and will open up the class Morning at 11 a.m. against #1 ranked Cascade a team that is 37-3, the Bulldogs are 21-9 and making the schools 1st ever State Tournament appearance and coach Gary Sharp is at state for the 1st time.
New London High School brought home a 3rd place finish from the 2015 Class 1A State Summer Softball Championships after beating River Valley 4-0 in the 3rd place consolation game Friday. Morgan Christner threw a 3 hitter in the circle and struck out 13 Wolverine batters giving her 405 for the season. That performance and the others she had in the tourney earned her All Tournament Team honors. Kenadi Schulte led the hitting for the Tigers she was 2-3, Breanna Metler had a hit, fielder’s choice and scored twice, she also was named to the All Tournament Team as she batted over .500 for the tourney. New London finishes the season 32-3.
The State Championship winners from Friday: Class 1A A.G.W.S.R. 12 Logan Magnolia 0 (3 innings) Class 2A Iowa City Regina won 2-0 over Cascade, 3A was won by Solon 3-1 over Benton Community, the 4A title went to Dallas Center Grimes for the 3rd year in a row they beat Winterset 5-2. Waukee won 5A 6-4 over Johnston.
The Mount Pleasant Park and Recreation Department is now taking registration for their Youth Summer Volleyball Camp for Girls in grades 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade! This camp will gear you up for the upcoming season! You will learn the basic fundamentals along with fun!

WMU vs. WACO Alumni Football Game…Friday July 31st, kickoff is at 8:00pm at WMU High School football field. Tickets are available for purchase from any player as well at Winfield City Hall. Presale tickets are $10.00 each and $5.00 from each presale ticket is given back to WMU.
