Mt. Pleasant and West Burlington-Notre Dame split a softball double header played on Maple Leaf Field last night.  Panthers took the opener 4-3, Shelby Allender pitched the win, Jackie Fraise was 3-4, Allison Buckert and Julie Lasswell were both 2-3.  WB-ND won the 2nd game 7-5, Cali Liechty took the loss in the circle for the Panthers.  Sarah Moffett, Cali Liechty, Allender and Lasswell led the M.P. offense.  The Panthers are 15-13 on the year and host Washington in Southeast Conference action tonight.

AREA SOFTBALL SCORES:  New London won twice over Van Buren 2-1 and 6-0.  Morgan Christner pitched both wins, striking out 28 batters on the night and allowed just 3 hits.  Victoria Noel and Jorgi Krieger had doubles in the 1st game and Breanna Metler was 2-2, Camryn Blint had 2 hits also.  In the 2nd game Emily Parks and Kenadi Schulte had 2 hits.  New London wins the Southern Division Super Conference title with the sweep and hosts Danville tonight.  #1 Highland swept #7 Wapello 5-0 and 4-1.  Central Lee shutout Harmony 12-0, L&M scored a 15-1 win over IMS.  Keokuk blanked Mediapolis 14-0.


Mt. Pleasant swept a double header over West Burlington last night 7-3 and 11-0.  Dalton Shull was the winning pitcher with Kincaid Mitchell providing relief.  Ryan Moutrie pitched his first varsity win in the 2nd game giving up one hit.  Pat Canby homered in each game to lead the offense.  The Panthers are at home tonight for two games with Washington.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has announced the pairings for the upcoming Class 1A and 2A baseball tournaments.  Class 1A begins on July 11th with Waco playing Holy Trinity Catholic in Winfield at 7 p.m.  The winner of that game advances to play Burlington Notre Dame at 5 p.m. July 14th at Winfield.  The 2nd game at that site that night will be New London tangling with WMU at 7 P.M.  #2 ranked Van Buren is in the bottom bracket of the district and will play Harmony is the 1st round July 14th at 7 p.m. on the Warriors home field.  Semi final action at both sites will be July 16th and the final will be in Winfield July 18th.

Class 2A District has West Burlington seeded #1 and getting a 1st round bye.  They will play the winner of the July 11th matchup between Central Lee and Mid Prairie on July 14th at 7 p.m. at Mid Prairie.  West Branch, Columbus Community and Iowa City Regina are in the bottom bracket.  The 3A and 4A pairings will be announced next week.


ON THE LOCAL SPORTS SCENE:   THURSDAY:  MPHS JV softball and baseball at Washington at noon.  MPHS varsity softball and baseball at Washington 5:30.  FRIDAY:  MPHS softball at Tournament in Iowa City.  SATURDAY:  MPHS softball at Iowa City Tournament.



Olympic gold medalist and famed University of Iowa wrestling coach,  Dan Gable will speak at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center, Thursday, July 2 at 7:30 p.m. and sign his book, A Wrestling Life – The Inspiring Stories of Dan Gable. The event is free and open to the public.
          The Fairfield Arts & Convention Center and the Trojan Athletic Booster Club have teamed up to bring Coach Gable to Fairfield with a meet and greet opportunity from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. The Booster Club will be selling Iowa Pork Loin sandwiches and chips as part of Gable’s appearance in Fairfield.



There is summer training runs underway for anyone interested in Cross Country. Everyone is welcome and middle school runners are also encouraged to join.

There will be morning runs every Monday and Wednesday at 630 AM at the Old Threshers Theatre Museum.

There will be evening runs every Tuesday and Thursday at 700 PM at the Saunders Park.

There will be a 100 Mile club for those who keep track and run at least 100 miles during the summer break.

The runs will vary in mileage for all levels of runners.


During the 4th of July holiday weekend there is two golf tournaments to play in at the Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club.  On the morning of July 5th there is a 2 person Ryder Cup format tourney at 8 a.m.  6 holes of best shot, 6 holes of best ball and 6 holes of alternate shot, cost is $50 per team and open to the public.  In the afternoon on July 5th at 2 p.m. there is a 4 couple alternating best shot tournament.  Entry fee is $80 per team and it’s open to the public.
