The Mt. Pleasant Panther baseball team dropped their District Final contest to 4th ranked Fairfield last night, partly because they dropped the ball 9 times and the Trojans used those 9 errors to roll to an 11-4 win on their home field and advance onto the Substate Final tomorrow night at Washington against Solon who edged Mt. Vernon 2-1 in the other semi-final game last night. Fairfield jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning and built a 6-0 lead before Mt. Pleasant picked up 3 runs in the top of the 3rd, the Panthers other run came in the top of the 6th when Cooper Huckabone hit a solo home run, he also had 2 RBI’s on the night. Mt. Pleasant ends the year 19-18.
In Class 4A substate baseball. Davenport Central defeated the Burlington Grayhounds 10-3.
Tonight in Class 2A District Championship action Van Buren-Harmony will battle Iowa City Regina at Washington tonight at 7 p.m. The winner goes onto state.
New London fell in the 1st round of the State Softball Tournament in Ft. Dodge to Newell Fonda 2-1, now the Tigers move to the consolation round and play 2 games Wednesday to see if they can finish as high as 5th place. Newell Fonda had lost twice previous to New London in 2013 and 2015 games but used pinpoint bunting and strong pitching to challenge the Tiger defense and bats that were held to 4 hits spread over 4 different players. New London will now move to the consolation bracket and will play West Harrison at 10 a.m. tomorrow their next game will be at 2 p.m. playing for 5th if they win in the morning or 7th if they fall in the day’s opener.
Fairfield will open up their State Softball action tonight, at 5:30 pm they will play Creston who has a 24-11 record. If the Trojans win they move onto the semi-finals at 1 pm Thursday, if they lose they will play tomorrow at noon in the consolation round and again at 4 pm.
There will be a football meeting for any Winfield Mt. Union High School student interested in playing, meet tonight at 6:30 in the WMU cafeteria.
For the second straight year, Carlisle baseball coach Blake Heitmeier picked up conference coach of the year honors in the Raccoon River Conference. Former Mt. Pleasant Panther Blake Heitmeier led Carlisle to back-to-back league titles. Heitmeier has an overall record of 52-16 leading the Wildcats.
The Holy Trinity Catholic Athletic Board Golf Outing is coming up July 22nd at the Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course rural Ft. Madison. This is a 4 person best shot, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Cost is $75 per golfer or $300 for a team of four. Entry covers green fees, cart, beverages, & dinner after golf. Many cash raffles will be held.
