New London has a familiar opponent for their opening round of the State Softball Championships at Ft. Dodge today.  The 5th ranked 24-10 Tigers will play 9th ranked 28-13 Newell-Fonda at 1:30 p.m.  New London played Newell-Fonda in the opening game of the 2015 tournament and won 9-1. They also played them 3 years ago and won.  If the Tigers win today they would play in the semi-finals Thursday at 3 p.m. against the winner of the Akron-Westfield vs West Harrison 1st round game.  A loss today by the Tigers would mean 2 consolation games on Wednesday, one at 10 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m.  The Championship for Class 1A will be played Friday at 5 p.m., the consolation game would be at 3:30 p.m. Friday.  KILJ-FM 105.5 and will carry all the New London games at State this week.


The New London Tiger baseball team fell to Highland 7-0  in the Class 1A district Championship on the Huskies home field Saturday night.  New London put up a big scoring threat in the top of the 1st inning, but left the three Tigers standing on the bags as they hit into a inning ending double play, New London only had 1 more baserunner get to third base the rest of the night.  Highland pitching held New London to just 3 hits, while the Huskies had 11.  New London ends the season with a 17-9 record, Highland advances onto the Substate Championship game Tuesday night against North Linn at Solon.

Class 2A District Championship action at Mediapolis Saturday night saw Van Buren-Harmony beat Mediapolis 3-1.  The Iowa City Regina team beat Wilton 2-0 and will now the Van Buren-Harmony Warriors in the Substate Final at Washington Tuesday night at 7 p.m.  The winner goes onto state.


Mt. Pleasant completed the sweep of the Keokuk Chiefs in High School baseball Friday night in Fairfield at the Class 3A District Semi-Final game.  The Panthers who are now 19-17 won over the chiefs for the 5th time this season with a 12-2 five inning win. Levi Parkevich pitched the win for M.P. relieved by Colby Potts.  Pat Canby was 2 for 4 at the plate and had 2 RBI’s.

It’s now onto tonight’s 7 p.m. District finals against 4th ranked Fairfield on their home field, Fairfield 26-7 struggled to beat Ft. Madison 2-32 in the other semi Friday 7-3.  KILJ will have score updates of the Panther game on and on our facebook and twitter sites.  Also tonight Solon will play host to Mt. Vernon, both those teams were winners Friday night and tonight’s winners of the two District Championship games will meet Wednesday night at 7 p.m. with the winner going onto state.

The Holy Trinity Catholic Athletic Board Golf Outing is coming up July 22nd at the Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course rural Ft. Madison.  This is a 4 person best shot, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.  Cost is $75 per golfer or $300 for a team of four.
