Mt. Pleasant High School opens class 3A District baseball tournament action on the road at Oskaloosa tonight at 5 p.m. against the Chariton Chargers.  M.P. has a record of 17-16 for the season and were runners-up in the Southeast Conference race to Fairfield.  The Chargers are 12-16 heading into tournament play.  These two teams were to meet early during the regular season but that contest was rained out.  Taylor Alliman and Pat Canby have been leading the hitting attack for the Panthers, both hitting just under .400 on the year.  Brady Anderson has led the pitching staff, but Marcus Moothart has been coming on strong in the 2nd half of the season.  KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the game live.  Oskaloosa will play Centerville in the 7 p.m. game of the double header with the winners of the two games meeting Monday night at 7 p.m. in Oskaloosa.

 

The Winfield Mt. Union Wolves and Notre Dame Nikes were to play a Class 1A District Semifinal game at Winfield last night but yesterday’s heavy rains forced the postponement of the game to tonight at 7 p.m.  The Wolves won in the 1st round over New London, Notre Dame is coming off a win over Holy Trinity Catholic.  #2 ranked Van Buren was to host Cardinal of Eldon last night in the other half of the District but that game also was postponed to tonight because of storms. The Warriors rolled over Harmony in the 1st round and Cardinal edged Danville to advance to the semis.

The MPHS softball team will be having a meet the players event at Shottenkirk Motors in Mt. Pleasant  tomorrow at noon.  The players and coaches will be there for picture taking, autographs and poster signing.  KILJ Radio and kilj.com will be interviewing the players on the air beginning at noon courtesy of Southeast Iowa Renal Dialysis.  Meet the players on the state bound MPHS softball team Saturday noon at Shottenkirk Motors and KILJ.

 

New London is having a sign up for a pep bus that will be going to the New London State Tournament softball game on Monday night at 7 p.m. against Newell Fonda.  Cost to ride the air conditioned bus is $10, you must buy your game ticket at Ft. Dodge.  Sign up cut off is Friday at 4 p.m.  Contact Jessica at the New London Community School superintendent’s office.

 

The Mount Pleasant Park and Recreation Department is now taking registration for their Youth Summer Volleyball Camp for Girls in grades 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade! This camp will gear you up for the upcoming season! You will learn the basic fundamentals along with fun!

This week at the Henry County Fair has a couple of events you won’t want to miss.  The always popular Demolition Derby at 7 p.m. in front of the grandstand Saturday night July 18thCommunity 1st Credit Union will sponsor an IFPA sanctioned truck and tractor pull in front of the grandstand at 4 p.m. Sunday July 19th.

Sports shooting is coming to Southeastern Community College (SCC) this fall. The team will compete against other colleges across the state including the University of Iowa.

SCC sports shooting Assistant Coach, Brain McAtee, says former SCC alumnus, John Klopfenstein, saw the growing success of sports shooting programs at other colleges and encouraged SCC to add a sports shooting team to its repertoire. The top 10 athletes on the team will travel to competitions. Theteam is open to all male and female, full-time SCC students.  SCC sports shooting Head Coach, Tim Weaver is confident the Blackhawks will field a competitive team. The split-season runs August through November and March through May.

 

WMU vs. WACO Alumni Football Game…Friday July 31st, kickoff is at 8:00pm at WMU High School football field. Tickets are available for purchase from any player as well at Winfield City Hall. Presale tickets are $10.00 each and $5.00 from each presale ticket is given back to WMU.
