It finally has happened, the Mt. Pleasant high School girls softball team has qualified for the State summer Softball Championships in Ft. Dodge. After many years of trying they succeeded at home last night in their Regional Championship battle against 8th ranked Davenport Assumption beating the Knights 3-1. The Panthers are joined in the 4A field by Fairfield who beat North Scott 1-0 also on the Maple Leaf diamond as part of a Regional double header. What won the game for Mt. Pleasant? Teamwork, with solid pitching from Shelby Allender who threw a 6 hitter, solid fielding with just 2 errors and solid hitting with M.P. getting 5 hits, 4 of them were doubles by Jackie Fraise, Shelby Allender, Sarah Moffett and Bailey Johnson. Jackie Fraise, Morgan Fraise and Sarah Moffett all had RBI’s. For the 2nd night in a row MPHS had to beat a ranked team with a much better record, Assumption was ranked 8th and had won 30 games. Just like when they played 11th ranked Keokuk in the semis, the Panthers executed better as a team and will take a 20 win 19 loss record to the state tournament, teams had better forget the record and notice Mt. Pleasant has developed a winning attitude and that has turned them into a winner. Mt. Pleasant will open the 4A State Tournament Monday at 11 a.m. against #3 ranked Winterset (30-11), KILJ-FM 105.5 . A win would put M.P. in the semis on Thursday at 7 p.m. A loss would put them in the consolation round to play at 9 a.m. Tuesday, KILJ-FM and kilj.com will carry all Panther State Tournament games live. OTHER TEAMS IN THE FIELD-Waverly-Shell Rock, Creston, Dallas Center Grimes, Fairfield, Ft. Dodge and Pella.
The Southeast Conference softball coaches have named the softball all conference teams. MPHS 1st team selection Shelby Allender. 2nd team-Julie Lasswell, Allison Buckert, and Bailey Johnson. Honorable mention-Jackie Fraise and Sarah Moffett. The Southeast Conference MVP was Mackenzie McClure of Fairfield. Academic All Conference Hattie Liechty, Jenna Stukerjurgen, Morgan Fraise.
