AREA BASEBALL SCORES: #2 class 1A Van Buren won over #3 ranked Lisbon 3-2 in 10 innings, the game was played at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City. Van Buren remains undefeated at 22-0, Lisbon is now 22-1. Notre Dame swept New London 9-3 and 7-3, Xavior Williams homered ine ach game for Notre Dame. Quincy Porter and Blake Nehring led new London. Danville 15 Harmony 1. Mediapolis and L&M split a twin bill, Falcons won the opener 3-2, Bulldogs took game two 5-2. WMU won over Highland 6-5. West Burlington won two games over Holy Trinity 14-4 and 11-1.
AREA SOFTBALL SCORES: #1 Highland 12 QWMU 0, #7 Wapello swept Pekin 12-2 and 7-6. Danville twice over Harmony 19-0 and 17-2. L&M swept Mediapolis 16-5 and 6-2.
ON THE LOCAL SPORTS SCENE: WEDNESDAY: MPHS freshman and JV baseball at Davenport Assumption. W. Burlington at MPHS baseball 5:30 p.m. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will broadcast the 1st game live. West Burlington at MPHS girls softball 5:30 p.m. THURSDAY: MPHS JV softball and baseball at Washington at noon. MPHS varsity softball and baseball at Washington 5:30. FRIDAY: MPHS softball at Tournament in Iowa City. SATURDAY: MPHS softball at Iowa City Tournament.
Olympic gold medalist and famed University of Iowa wrestling coach, Dan Gable will speak at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center, Thursday, July 2 at 7:30 p.m. and sign his book, A Wrestling Life – The Inspiring Stories of Dan Gable. The event is free and open to the public.
The Fairfield Arts & Convention Center and the Trojan Athletic Booster Club have teamed up to bring Coach Gable to Fairfield with a meet and greet opportunity from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. The Booster Club will be selling Iowa Pork Loin sandwiches and chips as part of Gable’s appearance in Fairfield.
There is summer training runs underway for anyone interested in Cross Country. Everyone is welcome and middle school runners are also encouraged to join.
There will be morning runs every Monday and Wednesday at 630 AM at the Old Threshers Theatre Museum.
There will be evening runs every Tuesday and Thursday at 700 PM at the Saunders Park.
There will be a 100 Mile club for those who keep track and run at least 100 miles during the summer break.
The runs will vary in mileage for all levels of runners.
During the 4th of July holiday weekend there is two golf tournaments to play in at the Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club. On the morning of July 5th there is a 2 person Ryder Cup format tourney at 8 a.m. 6 holes of best shot, 6 holes of best ball and 6 holes of alternate shot, cost is $50 per team and open to the public. In the afternoon on July 5th at 2 p.m. there is a 4 couple alternating best shot tournament. Entry fee is $80 per team and it’s open to the public.
The Iowa Girls High School Athletic union has announced their Regional Tournament pairings. Mt. Pleasant girl’s softball team will open up tournament play against Ft. Madison in the 1st round of the Class 4A Regional Tournament on the Panthers home diamond at 7 p.m. on Thursday July 9th. The winner of that game will play Keokuk on the Lady Chiefs diamond on July 11th. The Regional Championship will be July 14th at Mt. Pleasant. Davenport North, Central DeWitt and Davenport Assumption are in the top bracket of the Regional.
Class 1A Regional play has Winfield Mt. Union at Van Buren on July 6th. New London has a 1st round bye and will play the winner of the Keota vs Harmony game at Eldon July 8th at 5:30 p.m. Regional semi final at New London July 10th and the finals at Ottumwa July 13th. Teams in the Bottom Bracket are: Tri County, Moulton Udell, North Mahaska, Twin Cedars, Moravia, Seymour, and Sigourney.
Class 2A has Danville at Pekin July 6th, Columbus at Iowa City Regina July 8th, Wapello has a 1st round bye.
Class 3A- Mediapolis at Mt. Vernon July 8th.
Class 5A-Burlington at Bettendorf July 11th, Clinton, Muscatine and Pleasant Valley in upper bracket
