MPHS wrestling team traveled to Mediapolis last night to battle the #4 ranked defending state champion Bulldogs. The host school won 42-27, highlight of the meet was the matchup at 145 pounds where Mt. Pleasant’s Colten Mertens ranked #7 in Class 3A defeated Class 2A #1 ranked Mason Buster 5-2. Other Panther winners were: James DeMeyer, Tyler Davis, Levi Parkevich, Kallin Crilen and Keegan Pullis.
OTHER WRESTLING SCORES: Burlington 42 Muscatine 22, Washington 50 Ft. Madison 9, Columbus Community/WMU won three duals at New London-they beat Waco 68-10, New London 48-30 and Lone Tree 78-6. New London beat Waco 47-18 and Lone Tree 50-0. Waco beat Lone tree 36-12. Keokuk won two duals last night 51-16 over Fairfield and West Hancock 60-15. Davenport West Beat L&M 53-21, Mercer County 60 L&M 18, Alburnett 63 L&M 0. West Burlington/Notre Dame/Danville 33 Tri County 30, Tri County 36 Wapello 34, Wapello 48 West Burlington/Notre Dame/Danville 18.
Girls basketball saw #5 Keokuk beat Central Lee 66-51 and Danville beat L&M 39-30. Boys basketball #4 Danville 62 L&M 21.
The Iowa Wesleyan women’s basketball team hosted Spalding University in a Saint Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match-up. The Tigers remain undefeated in the conference after rolling to a 69-55 victory over the Golden Eagles. Five Tigers reached double digits in the win as IW improved to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in SLIAC play. Darby Massner had a team high 14 points and also added four rebounds. Dakota Flesner and Cairece Allen each scored 13 points for the Tigers. Flesner grabbed seven rebounds on the night, and Allen was 3-6 from behind the arc. Kaylee Moseley was 4-7 from three point range and finished the night with 12 points, and Rachel Williams added 11 points, six assists, and eight rebounds in the victory.
The Tigers will return to action Saturday, January 9th at 1:00 pm. They will host Eureka College for a SLIAC conference contest.
The men’s basketball team hosted Spalding University also and Iowa Wesleyan came away with the 85-82 victory over the Golden Eagles. With the win, IW improved to 4-1 in conference play and remains on top of the standings.
Mitch Drey led the team with 22 points on 7-10 shooting, including 3-3 from the three point line. Brock Butler added 21 points on 8-13 from the field and 5-8 from behind the arc. Chris Fowler was just shy of a triple-double with 18 points, 10 assists, and 9 rebounds in the win.
Iowa Wesleyan’s next game is Saturday. They will host Eureka College at 3:00 pm in Olan G. Ruble Arena.
The MPHS girls’ basketball team is on the road tonight to play at Washington in Southeast Conference action. The Panthers are 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference. Washington is 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the league. Leading the Panther offense is sophomore Kalynn Batey , Junior Sarah Moffett and senior D’Jannay Patterson all scoring right at 9 points per game. The Demons are led by Senior Addie Pacha and sophomore Sarah Nacos each scoring around 10 points a game. The freshmen teams play at 4:45, followed by JV and then varsity action. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the varsity game live. We will have action updates on the boy’s games between the two schools going on in Panther Gymnasium. Mt. Pleasant is 5-3 overall and 3-0 and in 1st place in the conference. The Washington team is 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the league. Brady Sartorius leads M.P. at 16 points a game and Jordon Magnani scores 12 per game. Washington is led by Derek Anding scoring 19 points a game, Dalton Myers scores 10 per game. MPHS is coming off a 66-58 loss at Iowa City City High Monday night, Washington lost Tuesday at home against Ft. Madison 57-54.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has released their 1st rankings of girls basketball teams for 2016. Burlington Notre Dame is #6 in Class 1A, Springville is ranked #1. Unity Christian tops Class 2A, Class 3A is led by Nevada. Keokuk is ranked #5 in Class 4A and Fairfield 13th with Ballard ranked #1. Class 5A has Johnston ranked #1.
The University of Northern Iowa football team has received the commitment from a Southeast Iowa Athlete to attend UNI and play football. Xavier Williams a multi-sport athlete at Burlington Notre Dame and West Burlington has been a standout for West Burlington/Notre Dame in football and track and for Notre Dame in basketball and baseball.
Mt. Pleasant Athletic Booster Club has their annual girls and boys New Years Basketball Tourney for 5th thru 8th grade girls and boys teams on January 16th for the girls and on the 17th for boys teams.
