The drowning death of a Solon High School student over the weekend led to the postponement of the girls’ basketball games between Mt. Pleasant and Solon last night in Mt. Pleasant.  The Spartans were supposed to come to town for Freshman-JV and varsity basketball, but those games will be postponed till a later date, because of the drowning death of 17-year-old Tanner Wymer who died after he and another man fell into Coralville Lake when their canoe capsized Sunday. Searchers recovered Wymer’s body Monday morning.  The school held a candlelight vigil to remember the teen Monday night, and opened the building for students who wanted to spend time together. Solon High School Principal Nathan Wear said Tanner Wymer was a multi-sport athlete.  He and his 51 year old friend were canoeing in Coralville Lake taking pictures of homes.  It’s believed that wind and big waves caused the canoe to tip.  Neither of the men was wearing a life jacket, the other passenger in the canoe was able to swim to shore, while Wymer was not.

The Mt. Pleasant varsity boys’ basketball team dropped a non-conference game at Iowa City City High Monday night by a score of 66-58.  The Little Hawks jumped out to a 17-9 1st quarter lead and led 29-19 at halftime.  M.P. was able to outscore the host school in the 2nd half but couldn’t overcome the height advantage the Hawks had in their comeback effort.  Jordon Magnani scored 20 points for the Panthers, Kieran Kohorst had 15 and Brady Sartorius 11.  MPHS will host Washington Friday night in Southeast Conference action, Mt. Pleasant is in 1st place in the league race with a 3-0 record and are now 5-3 overall.  ICCH won the JV game 52-50, Tucker Johnson scored 13 points and Jake Lowe and Tanner Ruby added 11 each.

The Mt. Pleasant High School boys basketball teams traveling to Iowa City Monday night had some anxious moments when a piece of ice stuck the windshield of the team bus shattering the glass.  The bus driven by Tom Lowe continued onto the game site and then a replacement bus was brought to Iowa City for a safe return to Mt. Pleasant by the team.
