The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has announced the Regional Tournament pairings for the 1A-2A and 3A teams in the area. Class 1A opens up February 12th when Winfield Mt. Union plays at New London at 7 p.m. the winner will play #1 Burlington Notre Dame on the Nikes home court February 17th. Waco plays host to Tri County on the 12th and would play the winner of the Keota vs Ims game on the 17th with a 1st round win. Harmony Plays at Holy Trinity Catholic and Moulton-Udell plays at Van Buren on February 12th and the inners play at HTC on the 17th. Other schools in that Regional are: English Valleys, Sigourney, Lone Tree, Keota, Iowa Mennonite.

Class 2A 1st round games has Danville at Wapello and West Burlington at Columbus Community on Valentines night at 7 p.m.

Class 3A has #1 ranked Mediapolis hosting L&M on February 14th and Davis County plays at Central Lee. The winners meet February 17th at Mediapolis in the semi finals. Other schools in that regional: PCM, Centerville, Albia and Chariton.

The 4A and 5A tournament schedule will be released next Monday.

 

 

The Mt. Pleasant High School girl’s basketball team just keeps winning. Last night the Panthers went to Solon and defeated a talented Spartan team 52-43. Kelsi Phipps hit for 20 points again, Natalie Ita scored 11 points all from the free throw line as she went 11 of 12. They now have won 4 straight games and 10 of their last 11, this Friday Ft. Madison comes to Panther gym for a conference battle.

In the JV game M.P. won 52-38, Rylee Amos scored 11 points and Carolyn Lutovsky added 10.

The MPHS freshman team won 41-24.

OTHER AREA SCORES: GIRLS-Columbus Community 42 Highland 37, Central Lee downed Washington 65-55, #1 Mediapolis 54 Keokuk 43 (Andrea Larsen did not play for Mediapolis she is out this week with appendectomy).

BOYS-#2 Danville 94 Maharishi 10, Wilton 71 Wapello 36, Highland 82 Columbus Community 57, Fairfield 60 Davis County 47.

 

The Mt. Pleasant Middle School 7th grade girls basketball team played Monday at Keokuk.

The Mt. Pleasant Middle School 8th grade boys basketball team played against Keokuk. M.P. won the “A” game 49-24, Rhett Zeglen scored 15 points, Levi Puig and Tucker Johnson each had 6. Panthers took the “B” game 33-13, Riley McQiggen scored 8 and Mathew Moothart had 7. Mt. Pleasant won the “C” game 23-12, Braden Denning had 8 points.

 

The MPHS 5-9 boys basketball team hosts 11-4 Chariton tonight in nonconference basketball. The Panthers are coming off a win Saturday at Oskaloosa that proved to be rather costly as late in the game starting center Kieran Kohorst suffered a broken thumb and will keep him out of the lineup for most likely the rest of the season. The Chargers played last night and won against Central Decatur 62-59, they are the only boys basketball team in the state that features two players averaging over 20 points a game. T.J. Hockenson 6’ 6” Junior center and 6’2” Junior guard average 23.5 and 21.7 points respectively. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the varsity game live tonight beginning at 7:30 p.m.

 

The Iowa State Cyclone men downed Texas in Hilton Coliseum 89-86 after leading by 21 points at one time.

For the 1st time since Nebraska joined the Big Ten Conference the Iowa womens basketball team beat the Cornhuskers 78-72 in overtime at Carver Hawkeye.

 

Iowa Wesleyan will host Tiger Spirit Night on Thursday, January 29 in Ruble Arena.  The community is invited to come out to see the redesigned gym floor when the men’s and women’s basketball teams take on Spalding University.  The women’s game will tip off at 6:00 p.m. with the men’s game following at 8:00 p.m.  Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

Admission to the game is free with a canned food donation which will benefit the Mount Pleasant Fellowship Cup.  Be one of the first 100 people in the door to receive a free Tiger Rally Towel.

Other activities for Tiger Spirit Night include the National Anthem performed by the combined Mount Pleasant Elementary School Chorus, free autograph sessions with the men’s and women’s basketball teams, and a photo booth with Wesley the Tiger.  A special tribute to the late Kenneth Miller, class of 1960, who funded the gym floor renovation through a gift to athletics.
