The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has announced the tournament pairings for the Class 1A-2A and 3A girl’s basketball teams.

Class 1A opens February 11th.  Keota plays at Waco, Winfield Mt. Union at Holy Trinity Catholic and English Valleys at New London all games begin at 7 p.m.  The 2nd round is February 16th.  The Waco-Keota winner plays at Burlington Notre Dame, the winners of WMU vs HTC and English Valleys-New London play at HTC.  The winners on the 16th advance to the semi finals of the Regional at Notre Dame on the 19th and that winner goes to the final  on February 22nd at Wilton.

 

Class 2A opens on February 13th with West Burlington at Danville and Wapello at Columbus Community.  On February 16th the West Burlington-Danville winner goes to Highland.  Wapello-Columbus winner goes to Pekin.  The semi final will be at Pekin on the 19th and the regional final the 22nd at Pella Christian.

 

Class 3A opens February 13th with Davenport Assumption at Mediapolis and Davis County at Central Lee.  The Mediapolis winner plays Mt. Vernon at Mt. Vernon on February 17th.  Mid Prairie or Albia will play the Central Lee winner at Central Lee on the 17th.  Regional final action for the Mediapolis regional will be at Solon on the 20th.  Central Lee regional final at Oskaloosa on the 20th.

 

The 4A and 5A regional pairings will be released next week.

 

Dakota Flesner of Iowa Wesleyan has been named the SLIAC Player of the Week for women’s basketball after averaging 23.5 points per game and 12.5 rebounds per game last week.

 

Iowa State won another Big Monday game at home against a highly ranked opponent.  Cyclones last night beat #4 ranked Kansas 85-72, Monte Morris led the Clones with 21 points, Jordon Ashton of Mt. Pleasant played but did not score.

Iowa Hawkeye men’s basketball team is #3 in A.P. college basketball poll and #4 in coaches poll.

 

 

The Mt. Pleasant High School girls and boys basketball teams travel a long way for action tonight. Panthers will be at Chariton to play the Chargers in non-conference action.  Chariton last night played host to Leon Central Decatur, the girls lost by a score of 64-52 to move their record to 7-7.  M.P. girls are 4-11 overall after beating Oskaloosa Saturday 47-36.

Panther boys will be playing a tall and talented Chariton team that is ranked 10th in the state and has a 14-1 record  after beating Central Decatur last night 68-60. The Panther boys are 10-4.  KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the games live beginning at 6 P.M.

The latest Associated Press Iowa High School boys basketball poll has the Danville Bears ranked #1 in Class 1A, they replace West Hancock who lost last week and dropped to 4th.  Class 2A is topped by Western Christian, 3A has Pella ranked 1st Chariton is 10th.  The large school class has Valley of West Des Moines #1.

 

The Mt. Pleasant Middle School 7th grade girls’ basketball team played at Keokuk Monday.

Middle School 8th grade boys played host to Keokuk.  In the “A” game M.P. won 49-37, Keegan Kohorst 23 points, Brody Bender 13.  “B” game M.P. won 36-16, Jake Moffett had 11 points.  “C” game Mt. Pleasant won 20-11, Charlie Bryant scored 8 points and Trayton Marcos 6.

 

Dakota Flesner a senior post player for Iowa Wesleyan has been named SLIAC women’s basketball player of the week for her performances in last week’s games. Flesner averaged 23.5 points per game and 12.5 rebounds per game in the two contests last week.

In the win over Webster University, she had 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. She then followed that with 27 points, nine rebounds, and three assists in the Tigers win over MacMurray. Flesners’ play on the week helped Iowa Wesleyan remain in the top spot of the SLIAC standings. The Tigers are 14-3 overall and 9-1 in conference play.

 

The Mt. Pleasant community is invited to an afternoon of entertainment on Saturday, January 30 at Iowa Wesleyan University, Ruble Arena.  Come out to celebrate Tiger Athletics as the men’s and women’s basketball teams take on Westminster College. The women’s game begins at 1:00 p.m. and the men’s game tips off at 3:00 p.m.   Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. “Acapella, a Mount Pleasant women’s singing group” will sing the National Anthem at 12:50 p.m.

This game will also be a sponsored Coaches vs Cancer game – a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches – to leverage awareness, support and advocacy.  The area Relay for Life group will be in attendance to support these initiatives through activities, giveaways, bake sale and much more.
Bring two canned food items to benefit the Mount Pleasant Fellowship Cup for free admission. The first 100 people in the door will receive a free Tiger rally towel.

The Mt. Pleasant high School girls and boys bowling teams will host the DISTRICT #6 state qualifying meet on February 16th.  Schools joining Mt. Pleasant are:   Burlington, Keokuk and Ottumwa, action will take place at the Iris Bowling Center and start Time will be 11:00 AM.

 

The field is set for Super Bowl 50 February 7th in Santa Clara, California.  The Denver Broncos will tangle with the Carolina Panthers.
