Good night for the MPHS wrestling team last night as they hosted Fairfield and won the Southeast Conference dual, Mount Pleasant 46.00 Fairfield 28.00.

Panthers winning matches: 126 lbs: 4TH ranked Colten Mertens won over Zach Barnes by Fall in 2:47. 132 lbs: Connor Eads Charles Heisel by Fall in 3:45. 138: Garret Detrick over Bailey Jones by Fall 3:06. 145 lbs: Tyler Davis won by Forfeit. 152 lbs: Rob Pohren won by Forfeit. 160 lbs: Levi Parkevich over Drew Stever by Fall 1:55. 170: Noah Brown defeated Simon Spalla by major decision 13-3. At 285: Jackson Kelley was awarded a forfeit. At 106 lbs. there was a Double Forfeit.

The Panthers will wrestle at Williamsburg in a Tournament on Saturday.

Class 3A: Colten Mertens of Mt. Pleasant is ranked 4th in Class 3A at 126 pounds, Cam Sadeghi of Keokuk is 5th at that weight. Harlan Steffensmeier of Ft. Madison 4th at 106 lbs, Tanner Hocker Ft. Madison 7th at 132, Chase Seaney Ft. Madison 7th at 138, Dakota Shaw of Keokuk 3rd at 182.

Class 2A Mediapolis team is ranked 2nd behind Union High School. Mt. Pleasant Middle School 8th grade boys basketball team battled Fairfield also. The Trojans won the “A” game 37-21, Rhett Zeglen had 8 points and Jacob Stukerjurgen scored 5. Fairfield won the “B” game 29-27, Nathan Rauenbuehler scored 9 points and Riley McQiggen added 8. “C” game was won by M.P. 21-7, Willie Banks scored 6 and Jadyn Vongsavath had 5 points.

 

An important battle will take place tonight in Wright Field House in Keokuk when the Mt. Pleasant High School Girls basketball team plays Keokuk. The Panthers are 9-3 and coming off a nonconference win over Cedar Rapids Prairie Tuesday night 46-32 led by Kelsi Phipps with 19 points. In the Southeast Conference race the Panthers are 3-2 one game back of Keokuk and Fairfield who are tied for the lead with one conference loss each. Keokuk is 9-3 also overall and 4-1 in the conference after losing to Illini West a ranked team in Illinois 56-33 last night, they lost to Ottumwa earlier this week in nonconference action. Earlier this season Keokuk edged Mt. Pleasant in Panther Gymnasium 39-36 coming from behind late in the game to capture the win. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will broadcast the varsity game beginning at 7:30 p.m. The JV teams of the two schools meet at 6:15 p.m., there is no freshman game.

The boy’s basketball teams will battle in Panther Gymnasium, freshman at 4:45, followed by the JV then varsity. KILJ-FM will have score updates during our girls game broadcast. The Chiefs are 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference tied for the lead with Ft. Madison. Keokuk fell to Ottumwa earlier this week in nonconference play. In the previous meeting between the Panthers and Chiefs in Wright Field House was won by Keokuk 50-29. M.P. is coming off a loss at Muscatine Tuesday, their record is now 4-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Poll this week has defending class 1A champion Burlington Notre Dame ranked #1 and Mediapolis is ranked #1 in class 3A.

Northwestern wrestles the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City.

 

Mt. Pleasant High School will host an Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union girl’s and Iowa High School Athletic Association boy’s district bowling tournament on February 17th at the Iris Bowling Center. Teams involved along with the Mt. Pleasant High School teams will be: Oskaloosa, Burlington and Keokuk. The State Bowling team and individual qualifiers will be determined. Last year M.P. had 1 individual qualifier for the girl’s tournament and the MPHS boy’s team qualified and finished 9th.

 

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has released the District competitors for Class 1A and 2A boys basketball tournaments. The Districts are scheduled to begin February 16th. District #9 of Class 1A has Danville, Cardinal of Eldon, Harmony, Holy Trinity Catholic, Maharishi, New London, Pekin, Van Buren, Waco and Winfield Mt. Union. The winner of that district will play the winner of district #10 in the substate championship for the right to go to the state tournament. Teams in district #10: Keota, Lynnville-Sully, Moravia, Moulton Udell, North Mahaska, Seymour, Sigourney, Twin Cedars and Corydon Wayne.

The 2A District #10 has Central Lee, Columbus Community, Highland, Mediapolis, Notre Dame, Wapello and West Burlington. They will play the District #9 champ in the substate, the teams in that district are: Durant, L&M, Iowa City Regina, West Branch, West Liberty and Wilton.

The 3A and 4A substate pools will be announced in another week.

 

The Mt. Pleasant versus Solon girls basketball games that were to be played Monday January 5th have been rescheduled for Monday January 26th.  Fresh-Soph game begins at 4:30, followed by the JV and Varsity games. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the varsity game beginning at 7:30 p.m.

 

The Henry County Conservation Naturalist Cari Nicely has announced the schedule for this year’s fly tying classes. This year there is one for beginners and one for experienced tiers. Here are the details of the classes.
