The Iowa Wesleyan women’s basketball team hosted Westminster College last night. Poor shooting continues to plague the Tigers as they fell 43-67 against a tough Blue Jay team.

Karla Vietinghoff had 16 of her 18 points come in the second half after sitting most of the first half due to foul trouble. Jacey Hartweg added 8 points off the bench and was the second leading scorer for the Tigers. Dakota Flesner and Breanna Hall each had 6 rebounds on the night.

Iowa Wesleyan will return to action Saturday, January 17th at 1pm. The Tigers will travel to Principia College for their next contest.

 

Iowa Wesleyan men bounced back from Saturday’s loss to Spalding to defeat the Westminister Blue Jays 72-60 in Ruble Arena last night.

Chris Fowler led the Tigers on offense with 15 points on 7-8 shooting. Dion Lightner was right behind him with 13 points and 4 blocks, and he was also the teams leading rebounder with 7 boards, Brock Butler added 10 points off the bench.

The Tigers hit the road for their next game. They will face Prinicipia College Saturday, January 17 at 3pm.

 

The Mt. Pleasant Middle School wrestling team competed against Keokuk and Ft. Madison at Keokuk Tuesday. Winning matches were: Brayden Ackles, Tyler Raub, Dalton Rose, Hoang Mai, Chase Hesseltine, Nate Wallace, Jaden Davis, Corbin Broecker, Tabian Waddle, Hunter Faul, James DeMeyer, Zach Beason, David Amos and Daigen Ross.

AREA VARSITY WRESTLING TONIGHT: Mt. Pleasant at Washington, Davenport North and North Scott at Burlington, Ft. Madison at Fairfield, New London at Davis County, Waco at Iowa Valley.

 

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has released the District competitors for Class 1A and 2A boys basketball tournaments. The Districts are scheduled to begin February 16th. District #9 of Class 1A has Danville, Cardinal of Eldon, Harmony, Holy Trinity Catholic, Maharishi, New London, Pekin, Van Buren, Waco and Winfield Mt. Union. The winner of that district will play the winner of district #10 in the substate championship for the right to go to the state tournament. Teams in district #10: Keota, Lynnville-Sully, Moravia, Moulton Udell, North Mahaska, Seymour, Sigourney, Twin Cedars and Corydon Wayne.

The 2A District #10 has Central Lee, Columbus Community, Highland, Mediapolis, Notre Dame, Wapello and West Burlington. They will play the District #9 champ in the substate, the teams in that district are: Durant, L&M, Iowa City Regina, West Branch, West Liberty and Wilton.

The 3A and 4A substate pools will be announced in another week.

 

#11 Iowa State fell to #22 Baylor on the road 74-73 on a last second shot, the Cyclones trailed by 12 points at halftime but did get the lead late in the game before falling on the final shot.

The # 22 ranked Iowa Hawkeye women defeated Northwestern 83-70.

The 15th ranked Southeastern Community College men beat John Wood Community College 77-68 Steven Soukup and Isiah Graves scored 18 points.

The Southeastern womens team fell to Kirkwood 98-62.

 

It’s back to Southeast conference action for the Mt. Pleasant High School girls and boys basketball teams Friday night. The girls host Fairfield and the boys play on the Trojans home court. Fairfield is leading the conference race with a perfect 4-0 record and are 9-3 overall.   Mt. Pleasant is in 2nd place at 2-2 and 7-2 overall. It is still possible for the Panthers to win or tie for the title, but they have to win out in the second sweep through the conference schedule and get a little help from other teams. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will give you score updates on the girls game as we broadcast the varsity boys game from Fairfield. The Panther boys are 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference. They beat the Trojans when they met in Mt. Pleasant December 5th by a 54-33 score. Fairfield is now 2-8 overall and 0-3 in the league.
