The Mt. Pleasant Panther wrestling team hosted a class 3A District Saturday.  The Panthers finished 8th with 71 points, Iowa City West won the team title with 185.5.  Mt. Pleasant did not qualify anyone for the state meet.  The best finishers were Colten Mertens at 126 and Jackson Kelly at 285, they both placed 3rd. 3A wrestlers will be 1st on the mat Thursday morning at 9 a.m.
Mediapolis won the 2A District at Fairfield with 145.5 points, they advance 8 wrestlers to state, Columbus Community/Winfield Mt. Union advances 4 wrestlers. Class 2A wrestlers will begin 1st round wrestling at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
New London finished 7th in the 1A District at Wilton that was won by Lisbon.  The Tigers advance to state Avery Jacobs their 285 pound wrestler. Class 1A 1st round action will be Thursday night at 6 p.m. KILJ will have wrestling reports on area wrestlers at state as they go for the gold. Mediapolis will be involved in the team dual meet wrestling on Wednesday, they wrestle Central-Lyon George Little Rock at 9 a.m.
 
#1 ranked Mediapolis girls basketball team opened up tournament play on their home court with a 62-30 win over L&M, the Bullettes will entertain Davis County Wednesday night in the semi finals, the Mustangs defeated Central Lee 59-56.

The other half of the Regional saw PCM Monroe beat Centerville and Chariton beat Albia, those winners play at PCM Wednesday night. Wednesday night winners will meet at Washington Saturday night for the Regional final.
 
Iowa Wesleyan swept another women’s and men’s basketball double header at home against Fontbonne.  The Lady Tigers won 86-73 Led by Lauren Grubb who scored 22 points.  The Tiger men went to overtime and won 69-67 led by Chris Fowler with 30 points.  

 

Mt. Pleasant High School hosted the Southeast Conference bowling tournament at Iris Bowling Center Saturday.  Keokuk won the girls competition with a 2751 total, M.P. was 2nd at 2594.  Emma Overton rolled the best series for the Panthers a 408, 27 pins behind Keokuk’s Hannah Seyb who rolled a 435 to be the individual champion.
Mt. Pleasant won the boy’s title rolling a 3019, Eric Swan of Fairfield was the individual champ with a 466 series, Cameron Sammons led M.P. with a 458 total.

The 15th ranked Mt. Pleasant High School varsity girls basketball team won big at Washington Friday night 65-42 to place 2nd in the Southeast Conference, Fairfield won the title after beating Ft. Madison 42-38 at Fairfield Friday. For MPHS Kelsi Phipps hit for 19 points, Natalie Ita hit for 12, Shelby Allender and Hannah Becker scored 11. Mt. Pleasant ends the regular season 17-4 overall and 6-2 in conference. M.P. will open post season play at home Wednesday night against Clear Creek-Amana.

 

Mt. Pleasant varsity boys basketball team came from behind to beat the Washington Demons in Panther Gym Friday night 63-55. Brady Sartorius scored 23 points to lead the scoring, Dshundric Foster scored 14, Jordon Magnani added 13. Mt. Pleasant boys who are now 7-13 on the season host Solon tonight to wrap up the regular season.  The Spartans have a record of 8 wins and 11 losses.  They are coming off a loss last Tuesday to Dyersville Beckman by a score of 75-67.  They are led in scoring by Streeter McIIravy who averages 18 points a game, he’s one of 4 Solon players to average in double figures.  KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will have score updates on the Panther game during our live broadcast of 1A District play at Waco.

In the freshman game Friday night Mt. Pleasant won 56-51, Damian Lorenzo scored 12 points, Jonathan Ita 11, Tanner Ruby 10. Freshman boys now 11-6 and Host Solon this evening. Brock Wilson led the M.P. JV to victory with 15 points as the Maroon and Gold won 47-45.

 

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference boys basketball championship game was played at Southeastern Community College Friday night. #2 ranked Danville Bears pulled out a come from behind 66-62 win. Leading the scoring was Connor Hoelzen with 20, Connor surpassed the 1,000 career point mark with that performace, Kolton Jackson added 18 points.

 

The IHSAA class 1A and 2A boys basketball tournaments begin tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Waco High School. Harmony (2-20) plays New London (8-13) in the 1st game. The winner advances to play Danville at Winfield Mt. Union on Thursday February 19th. In the 2nd game tonight Maharishi (0-21) plays Waco (9-12). The winner Plays Holy Trinity Catholic at Van Buren on February 19th at 6:30 p.m. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will be broadcasting this double header from Waco beginning at 6:30 p.m.

 

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers bowling teams will host the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and Iowa High School Athletic Association boy’s district bowling tournament tomorrow at the Iris Bowling Center. Teams involved along with the Mt. Pleasant High School teams will be: Oskaloosa, Burlington and Keokuk. The State Bowling team and individual qualifiers will be determined. Last year M.P. had 1 individual qualifier for the girl’s tournament and the MPHS boy’s team qualified and finished 9th.

 

Mt. Pleasant Park and Rec Department announces their Little Dunkers basketball program for 1st & 2nd graders.

The youngsters in the program will learn how to dribble, pass, shoot! This is an instruction program for boys and girls in 1st & 2nd grade. Children will learn the basics of basketball through fun instructional drills. Youth sized basketballs and lowered baskets will be used. Program will be instructed by the MPCHS Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach, Paul Rundquist.

Fee: $20 residents and $25 non-residents

 

The #15 Mt. Pleasant Panther girls basketball team has been assigned to Region 4 in the upcoming tournament trail.  M.P. will open at home on 2/18 against Clear Creek-Amana a team with a 9-8 record.  The two teams have played similar opponents with similar results.  CC-A beat Williamsburg 59-29 and plays them again Tuesday night.  Mt. Pleasant beat them 53-40.  Clear Creek beat Solon 55-43 a team the Panthers beat 51-42.  The winner of the Panther-Clipper game will then travel to #9 Cedar Rapids Xavier on 2/21.  A win there would put them in the regional final at DeWitt 2/24 against Ft. Madison, Keokuk or #8 Davenport North who play in the top part of the bracket.  Ft. Madison plays at Keokuk in the 1st round, Davenport North hosts the winner.

 

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has set the District and Substate locations for the Class 3A teams. Mt. Pleasant will open up on February 23rd at Ft. Madison at 8 p.m. against the 8th ranked Bloodhounds. The early game that night will have Fairfield playing Keokuk at 6:30 p.m. The 1st round winners will meet in the District championship at Burlington On 2/26/15 and the winner of that games goes to the substate final on March 2nd in Muscatine.

The other district that makes up the substate has Williamsburg playing Washington at 6:30 p.m. on February 23rd at Clear Creek Amana. Clear Creek will then play South Tama in the other 1st round game. The winners play at Iowa City West on 2/26/15.
