When your two top scorers are held scoreless, it’s tough to win. The 14th ranked Mt. Pleasant Panther girls didn’t win Saturday night against 8th ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier on the Saints home floor in the Regional semi final game, the final score was Xavier 60 Mt. Pleasant 23. Seniors Kelsi Phipps and Hannah Becker who have led M.P. in scoring this year were held scoreless by a very tenacious and physical defense. Natalie Ita had 8 points to be the Panthers top scorer, Kalynn Batey added 6. Mt. Pleasant ends the year 18-5, Xavier 16-6 advances onto the Regional final Tuesday night at Central Dewitt against Davenport North 17-5 who won the other semi final game on their home floor against Keokuk by a 46-44 score.
The #1 ranked Mediapolis Bullettes girls basketball team punched their ticket for a return trip to the Class 3A State Tournament Saturday night at Washington against PCM Monroe with an 83-66 win. Mepo was led by freshman guard MacKenzie Rogers with 21 points, Darby Massner hit for 19, Andrea Larson scored 14 and Heidi Hillyard scored 11. March 3rd is when 24-0 Mediapolis will open op the 3A class at state against 16-8 Mt. Vernon who upset 6th ranked Center Point Urbana after trailing by 16 points at halftime. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the game live.
The Mediapolis Bulldog wrestling team survived some upsets in early rounds of the traditional state wrestling tournament to capture their 1st ever state team title in class 2A with 89 points and one champion Steve Holloway at 195 pounds. Creston Orient-Macksburg and Union High School tied for 2nd with 86 points. S.E Polk won class 3A and Alburnett class 1A. Long time Mediapolis head coach Dan Cummings took 8 wrestlers to the tournament this year, 6 of them brought home medals. Kyle Davis of Columbus Community/WMU finished 8th at 285 pounds. In Class 1A senior Avery Jacobs of New London finished 3rd at 285, his only loss was to the #1 ranked wrestler in the semi finals.
The Mt. Pleasant Panther boy’s basketball team has a 7-14 record and opens up tournament play tonight at #5 Ft. Madison with a 19-2 record as part of a double header. The 1st game will pit Fairfield against 18-3 Keokuk who is ranked 10th at 6:30 p.m. Ft. Madison has two convincing wins over the Panthers during the regular season, M.P. hopes they can turn the table in the 2nd season. #2 ranked Missouri knocked off the #1 ranked Iowa Hawkeye wrestling team in Carver Hawkeye Arena Sunday 18-12. The match was the Championship of the EAS/NWCA National Duals Championships.
The Iowa Hawkeye men’s basketball team traveled to Nebraska and crushed the Corn Huskers 74-46, Aaron White had 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Joey Logano won the Daytona 500 race in Daytona Beach , Florida Sunday. Pole sitter Jeff Gordon finished 33rd.
