Two KILJ area wrestlers will be going for the gold tonight at the State Wrestling Championships in Des Moines. #4 ranked Josh Keller a Junior with a 46-3 record for Columbus Community/WMU will wrestle #2 ranked Michael Millage of Cresco Crestwood a freshman with a 44-1 record in the class 2A 106 pound championship.

At 195 lbs. in 2A it will be the perfect matchup with top ranked Steven Holloway of Mediapolis at 54-1 against #2 ranked Brad Skubal of Washington High School who has a 46-3 record, those losses have been to Holloway in other matchups this season.

Avery Jacobs of New London lost in the semi-finals on a penalty point 5-4 to #1 ranked Joe Ricker from Mt. Ayr. The referee awarded Ricker the winning point saying Jacobs grabbed a finger of Rickers trying to escape. Jacobs will be in the wrestle backs today going for as high as 3rd place.

Mediapolis will have 5 wrestlers in the wrestlebacks today and they are also still in the running for a team championship, Bulldogs are 3rd place in the team race with 65 points heading into the final rounds of the tourney, Union Laporte City has the lead with 76.

Girls tournament basketball last night had 1A Regional semi final games. Waco Played English Valleys on the Bears home floor and lost 48-36. Jennie Green led Waco with 10 points, the Warriors end the year 16-8.

Burlington Notre Dame rolled over holy Trinity Catholic at Father Minett Gymnasium in Burlington 100-50. Taylor Hickey had 24 points for the #1 ranked and defending state champion Nikes. They will take their 22-1 record into Monday nights Regional final at Mt. Pleasant’s Panther Gym against English Valleys who has an 18-5 record. The winner goes onto state. Holy Trinity Catholic ends the year 14-10, Nicole Wilkens led the Crusaders in scoring with 12 points.
The 14th ranked Mt. Pleasant Panther girl’s basketball team takes their 18-4 record on the road to Cedar Rapids Xavier tonight to play the 8th ranked Saints in a Class 4A Regional semi final game. The Panthers won their 1st round game Wednesday night when they beat Clear Creek-Amana 52-39. In that game Senior Kelsi Phipps hit for 20 points after getting into foul trouble in the 1st quarter and only put up 1 point in the 1st half. Her performance put her over 1,000 points in her career, she is averaging 16 points a game this season. Senior teammates Hannah Becker and Natalie Ita each average 9 points per contest. Xavier plays a tough 5A schedule, their 6 losses are to Johnston, Iowa City West, C.R. Kennedy, West Des Moines Valley, West Des Moines Dowling and Linn-Mar. Their leading scorer is Lizzy Bailey at 13 points a game, she’s a 5’6” senior who has hit 31 3-pointers. If you look at these two teams on paper the matchup looks to be very even. They both average 56 points a game, they shoot about the same percentage from the field, three point range and free throw line. Xavier may have a little more bench depth, so avoiding foul trouble will be key for the Panthers. The winner of this semi final will play the winner of the Keokuk at Davenport North semifinal on Tuesday at Central DeWitt High School. We will be giving game updates on this contest as we broadcast live the Regional final at Washington with Mediapolis playing PCM Monroe.

When you are ranked #1 in the state, teams always play a little bit harder against you to try and be the team that beats the best. The #1 ranked and undefeated 23-0 Mediapolis Bullettes tonight tangle with the 16-7 PCM Monroe girls basketball team in the Class 3A Regional final to be played at Washington High School. PCM is led by Rachel Freland a 5’11” senior who averages 17 points a game with a lot of her points coming from 3 point range. They have played a challenging schedule with their losses being to Pella, Knoxville, Pella Christian, Gilbert, Nevada twice and Saydel. PCM only has 3 seniors on their team so they are a team that has a bright future. Darby Massner leads the Bullettes in scoring with 18 points a game, she also is a 3 point shooting threat hitting 48% of her attempts from beyond the arc. Mediapolis has a very strong inside presence with Andrea Larson who is coming off a 39 point 20 rebound performance in their win Wednesday night over Davis County. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will be carrying in the game live beginning at 7 p.m.
