It was a Class 1A boys District basketball double header on KILJ last night from Waco high School. In the opening game New London won over Harmony behind the 26 points of Quincy Porter. The Rockets were led by Winston Wallingford with 14. Tigers 9-13 advance with to play Thursday night against #2 ranked Danville at Winfield Mt. Union, game time is 6:30 p.m. KILJ will be broadcasting live. Harmony ends the year with a 2-21 record.

In the 2nd game Waco had to come from behind to win over winless Maharishi 75-35, B.J. Rogers dropped in 6 3-point field goals he hit 5 of them in a row and led the Warriors in scoring with 22 points. Waco will take their 10-12 record to Van Buren High School Thursday night to play Holy Trinity Catholic at 6:30 p.m.

CLASS 2A DISTRICT SCORES: Burlington Notre Dame defeated Wapello 71-39, Central Lee downed Mediapolis 53-47, West Burlington beat Columbus Community 90-76. Coming up Thursday night at Notre Dame, Highland plays Central Lee at 6:30 p.m. and Notre Dame plays West Burlington at 8 p.m.

 

Solon swept all three games from the Mt. Pleasant Panther boys in basketball played at Panther Gym last night. In the varsity game Solon won 75-54, Nathan McConnell scored 14 points. M.P. ends the regular season 7-14 and will open up tournament play next Monday night at Ft. Madison against the Bloodhounds. Solon won the JV game 46-42, Kincaid Mitchell led the scoring with 16 points, Panthers end the year 13-6 and a conference championship. In the freshman contest Solon won 66-62 in overtime, Damian Lorenzo led the Panthers with 19 points, Jonathan Ita had 14 and Jake Lowe 10 points. Freshman end the year with a 11-7 record and conference championship.

 

Mt. Pleasant Middle School 7th grade girls basketball team played Fairfield at Mt Pleasant Monday.

The Mt. Pleasant 8th grade boys hosted Fairfield in basketball. In the “A” game Fairfield won 46-36, Rhett Zeglen with 14 points and Chase Lamm added 12. “B” game Fairfield won 17-10 Riley McQiggen had 6 points. “C” game Mt. Pleasant won 20-15, David Blancas and Jaydyn Vongsavath each had 6 points.

 

New London girl’s basketball team with a 11-11 record will have a big challenge tonight when they play in the 2nd round of the Class 1A Regional. The Tigers who won in the 1st round against Winfield Mt. Union will travel to #1 ranked and defending class 1A state champion Burlington Notre Dame to play the 20-1 Nikes. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the game live beginning at 7 p.m. Also tonight the Waco Warriors who are 15-7 after a 1st round win over Tri-County will be in action at Keota against IMS a team they have beaten twice by margins of 16 and 26 points. Van Buren playing at Holy Trinity Catholic, Sigourney at English Valleys.

Pleasant Panthers bowling teams will host the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and Iowa High School Athletic Association boy’s district bowling tournament tomorrow at the Iris Bowling Center. Teams involved along with the Mt. Pleasant High School teams will be: Oskaloosa, Burlington and Keokuk. The State Bowling team and individual qualifiers will be determined. Last year M.P. had 1 individual qualifier for the girl’s tournament and the MPHS boy’s team qualified and finished 9th.

 

 

Dan Montanye has been hired as the sixth head coach in Iowa Wesleyan men’s soccer history. Montanye has spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s soccer team. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in marketing. He played four years of collegiate soccer at UW-Whitewater and was a team captain.

 

KILJ will have wrestling reports on area wrestlers and teams at The 2015 IHSAA State wrestling team and individual tournaments.  # 2 ranked Mediapolis Bulldogs will be involved in the team dual meet wrestling on Wednesday, they wrestle #6 ranked Central-Lyon George Little Rock at 9 a.m. Mepo finished 2nd last year and 3rd the year before.

The traditional tournament begins Thursday and Mediapolis should be competing for the team title. In Class 2A, Defending champion Assumption, Davenport has been a top four finisher each of the last seven years and is seeking its sixth title (winners also in 1995, 98, 99, and 2011), but the Knights have their work cut out for them. Their seven qualifiers are fourth best. Creston/Orient-Macksburg tops the 2A in qualifiers with nine and the Panthers hope to close the deal like they did in 2007. Mediapolis and Union, LaPorte City each qualified eighth and may have enough firepower to prevail. Mediapolis was runner-up last year and was third in 2013. Union has a pair of runner-up finishes in its history – 2000 and 2003 and was fourth in 2013. Also looking to get into the trophy ceremonies for the first time is Sergeant Bluff-Luton also with seven athletes advancing to the elite meet. Crestwood, Clarinda, and Solon have each qualified six athletes.
#1 ranked Mediapolis girls basketball team opened up tournament play on their home court with a 62-30 win over L&M Saturday night, the Bullettes will entertain Davis County tomorrow night in the semi finals, the Mustangs defeated Central Lee 59-56 to advance to the semis.

The other half of the Regional saw PCM Monroe beat Centerville and Chariton beat Albia, those winners play at PCM tomorrow night. Wednesday night winners will meet at Washington Saturday night for the Regional final.
 

Mt. Pleasant 17-4 overall and 6-2 in conference opens post season play at home Wednesday night against Clear Creek-Amana. The two teams have played similar opponents with similar results.  CC-A beat Williamsburg 59-29.  Mt. Pleasant beat them 53-40.  Clear Creek beat Solon 55-43 a team the Panthers beat 51-42.

Mt. Pleasant Park and Rec Department announces their Little Dunkers basketball program for 1st & 2nd graders.

The youngsters in the program will learn how to dribble, pass, shoot! This is an instruction program for boys and girls in 1st & 2nd grade. Children will learn the basics of basketball through fun instructional drills. Youth sized basketballs and lowered baskets will be used. Program will be instructed by the MPCHS Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach, Paul Rundquist.
