The 15th ranked Mt. Pleasant High School varsity girls basketball team won big at Washington Friday night 65-42 to place 2nd in the Southeast Conference, Fairfield won the title after beating Ft. Madison 42-38 at Fairfield Friday. For MPHS Kelsi Phipps hit for 19 points, Natalie Ita hit for 12, Shelby Allender and Hannah Becker scored 11. Mt. Pleasant ends the regular season 17-4 overall and 6-2 in conference. M.P. will open post season play at home Wednesday night against Clear Creek-Amana.
Mt. Pleasant varsity boy’s basketball team came from behind to beat the Washington Demons in Panther Gym 63-55. M.P. outscored the Demons 18-14 in the 3rd period and 22-13 in the 4th to gain the win and place 3rd in the Southeast Conference race. Ft. Madison won the title with a 72-40 win over Fairfield, Keokuk finished 2nd. Brady Sartorius scored 23 points to lead the scoring, Dshundric Foster scored 14, Jordon Magnani added 13. The 7-13 Panthers end the regular season at home Monday hosting Solon.
In the freshman game Mt. Pleasant won 56-51, Damian Lorenzo scored 12 points. Brock Wilson led the M.P. JV to victory with 15 points as the Maroon and Gold won 47-45.
The Southeast Iowa Super Conference championship game was played at Southeastern Community College Friday night with the #2 ranked Danville Bears pulling out a come from behind 66-62 win. Danville suffered from some foul trouble and inspired play from the Lone Tree Lions. The Bears fell behind in the 3rd quarter as they got outscored 22-10 in that 8 minute period, but then came back and outscored the Lions 23-16 in the 4th quarter to complete an undefeated 21-0 regular season. Leading the scoring was Connor Hoelzen with 20, Connor surpassed the 1,000 career point mark during last nights and Kolton Jackson with 18 points
IN OTHER SUPER CONFERENCE SCORES: Notre Dame 47 Highland 45, West Burlington 40 L&M 36, Holy Trinity Catholic 50 WMU 38, Wapello 73 Harmony 40, Mediapolis 64 WMU 53, Cardinal 57 Waco 53 (OT). Davenport North beat Burlington 49-47 in the Mississippi Athletic Conference.
The Class 1A-2A and 3A wrestling districts will be wrestled today beginning at noon. The top two place finishers in each weight class will qualify for the traditional state wrestling tournament next Thursday through Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Mt. Pleasant is hosting a Class 3A District. Joining the Panthers will be Burlington, Ft. Madison, Iowa City High, Iowa City West, Keokuk, Oskaloosa and Ottumwa. Schott of Regina in the 1st round. At 138 Reno Chiri of New London has #1 ranked Carter Happel of Lisbon in the 1st round, #8 ranked Trey Bisker of Wilton is also in that weight class. At 182 Tyler Mettler of New London will wrestle Mason Lyons of Bellevue in the 1st round, 5th ranked Jordon Challis of Tipton is in that weight class too. At 195 Alfredo Delacruz of Waco will wrestle Clayton Juhl of North Cedar in the 1st round, #8 ranked Brennen Grimm of English Valleys is also in that weight class. The #1 ranked Iowa Hawkeye wrestling team captured the Big Ten title outright with a 22-9 win at home against #16 Michigan.
Class 2A & 3A 1st round girl’s Regional basketball games begin tonight with Danville at Wapello and West Burlington at Columbus Community at 7 p.m.
Class 3A has #1 ranked Mediapolis hosting L&M Saturday, KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry that game live. Davis County plays at Central Lee.
Mt. Pleasant High School will host an Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union girl’s and Iowa High School Athletic Association boy’s district bowling tournament on February 17th at the Iris Bowling Center. Teams involved along with the Mt. Pleasant High School teams will be: Oskaloosa, Burlington and Keokuk. The State Bowling team and individual qualifiers will be determined. Last year M.P. had 1 individual qualifier for the girl’s tournament and the MPHS boy’s team qualified and finished 9th.
