The 15th ranked MPHS girl’s varsity basketball team won at home last night against Ottumwa 57-43. Panthers led 15-11 at the end of the 1st quarter, 25-19 at halftime and 38-34 going into the final stanza. Leading the scoring was Hannah Becker with 15 points and Kelsi Phipps with 13. M.P. will close out the regular season on the road Friday at conference foe Washington, Mt. Pleasant is assured of at least a tie for 2nd and still could possibly tie for the conference title if Ft. Madison wins over Fairfield.

The Panther JV team lost 37-35 to Ottumwa, Mt. Pleasant came from 20 points down in that game, had a last second shot to win the game but it went wide of the mark.

In the freshman game Mt. Pleasant Beat Ottumwa 42-27, Rylee Amos scored 12 points and Genna Christoforo added 11.

OTHER AREA GIRLS GAMES: Keokuk 58 Quincy, Ill. 32, Danville 50 WMU 44, Columbus Community 62 Wilton 36.

 

The Ottumwa Bulldogs had to come from behind to defeated the ever improving young Mt. Pleasant varsity boys team at Evans Jr. High Gym last night 62-54. Jordon Magnani poured in 21 points and Brady Sartorius added 13. M.P. is now 6-13 and plays host to Washington Friday. Class 4A Ottumwa has a record of 10-8.

Ottumwa won the JV game 52-51, Brock Wilson had 17 points and Alex Carrasco scored 15.

Ottumwa also won the freshman game 49-45, Tanner Ruby scored 16 points and Damian Lorenzo hit for 15.

 

The Mt. Pleasant Middle School 7th grade girls basketball team played Monday at Washington

The Mt. Pleasant Middle School 8th grade boys basketball team hosted Washington Monday.

In the “A” game M.P. won 32-19, Rhett Zeglen scored 13 points and Tucker Johnson added 8. In the “B” game M.P. won 20-16, Riley McQiggen scored 5 points. “C” game was won by Mt. Pleasant 26-15, Willie Banks and Braden Denning scored 6 points each.

 

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has set the District and Substate locations for the Class 3A teams. Mt. Pleasant will open up on February 23rd at Ft. Madison at 8 p.m. against the 8th ranked Bloodhounds. The early game that night will have Fairfield playing Keokuk at 6:30 p.m. The 1st round winners will meet in the District championship at Burlington On 2/26/15 and the winner of that games goes to the substate final on March 2nd in Muscatine.

The other district that makes up the substate has Williamsburg playing Washington at 6:30 p.m. on February 23rd at Clear Creek Amana. Clear Creek will then play South Tama in the other 1st round game. The winners play at Iowa City West on 2/26/15.

 

College basketball Monday night had the Oklahoma Sooners beat Iowa State 94-83, game was tied at 46 at halftime. Southeastern Community College won 101 to 60 over Little Priest Tribal.

 

Approval was given by the Mt. Pleasant School Board for expanding the Mt. Pleasant trap team into the 5th and 6th grade. The current coaches and more volunteers will be able to provide the instruction for the team.
