The MPHS baseball team handed out post season honors at their awards banquet.  Defensive player of the year Austin Smith, Offensive Player Pat Canby, Rookie of the Year Tyler Davis, Most Improved Player Spencer Braun, Coaches Award Tyler Ruby.  The MVP award was shared by Brady Anderson and Pat Canby.

The 2015 Mt. Pleasant football camp will be from Aug 5-7. Grades 9-12 will go from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and grades 7-8 will go from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. To participate, bring your completed physical, concussion and consent forms.  For more information contact varsity head football coach Shawn Striegel.  Registration forms for the 2015 Mt. Lee County Fair, re-scheduled Illinois Farm Pullers Association Pulls and Local Truck Pulls are scheduled for this Saturday, August 8th at 6pm.

Ryan Kriener a 6-foot-9-inch, 240-pound Spirit Lake High School  senior has committed to the Iowa Hawkeye men’s basketball team.  Iowa extended the offer after Kriener wrapped up a standout summer with his AAU team, Martin Brothers, with a win at the Division I AAU National Championships in Louisville, Ky. last weekend.

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah continued to dominate horse racing Sunday. But Iowan-owned Keen Ice is gaining on him.  The horses competed against each other in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.  American Pharoah, the first Triple Crown winner since 1978, took first by 21/4 lengths over Keen Ice in their first meeting since the Belmont Stakes on June 6.  Keen Ice, who had a $350,000 payday, gave the first-place finisher his closest race since the Kentucky Derby. American Pharoah won the Derby by one length over Firing Line.

An Iowa native won on the PGA Tour for the second time in three weeks Sunday.Troy Merritt, who was born in Osage, picked up his first career victory at the Quicken Loans National. Merritt shot up the leaderboard with a 10-under 61 Saturday, then closed with a final-round 67 for a three-shot victory over Rickie Fowler.

The 2015 high school football season is just a few weeks away.  The Mt. Pleasant Panthers will open at home August 29th against the Ottumwa Bulldogs a team that beat M.P. fell to 42-21 to open the 2014 season.  Other non-district games will be played at Mediapolis in week #2, Bulldogs won over the Panthers 35-6 last year.  September 18th Mt. Pleasant goes to Chariton a team they beat 57-33 last year who is led by 1st team all-state tight end T.J. Hockenson who has committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes.  Other wins came against Keokuk 18-13 and Ft. Madison 48-24 in the district.  Returning starters for MPHS include Joe Hess at quarterback, he threw 15 touchdowns and 6 interceptions while amassing 1543 yards and completing 96 of 163 passes.  Keegan Pullis, Collin Baccam and Cam Keomanavong return in the offensive line.  Pat Canby returns at running back and linebacker.  Other defensive starters are:  Cori Fitten, Zac Ebbling, Trey Cosgrove and Pullis.  KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry all Panther games live.
