Sports activities going on this week….TODAY:   The MPHS girls and 8th ranked boys cross country teams run at Williamsburg 1st race is at 4:30 p.m.  Some of the top cross country and track and field runners will be competing in this meet.  The Early Bird Invitational is being hosted by Iowa Mennonite School, L&M has a cross country invitational today also.  Mt. Pleasant High School volleyball teams play at 14th ranked Ft. Madison to open up conference play. Davenport Assumption is at Burlington, West Burlington at Holy Trinity Catholic, Keokuk plays at 10th ranked Fairfield, Wapello is hosting an invitational.

OTHER AREA SPORTS:

THURSDAY:  The MPHS volleyball teams’ host 10th ranked Fairfield.

FRIDAY:  Mt. Pleasant travels to Mediapolis for football, freshman game at 5 p.m. and varsity to follow.

SATURDAY:  Mt. Pleasant hosts a freshman volleyball tournament.  The girls and boys cross country teams will run at Pella’s Invitational.  Iowa Wesleyan opens their football season hosting Cornell College of Mt. Vernon kickoff is at 7 p.m. KILJ-FM.

 

The latest Iowa High School football rankings have West Des Moines Dowling leading Class 4A, Cedar Rapids Xavier tops Class 3A Washington is ranked 3rd in that class.  Class 2A is led by Boyden Hull-Rock Valley.  Perennial power Iowa City Regina leads Class 1A.  St. Ansgar is #1 in Class “A”.  The 8 Man Class has Don Bosco ranked #1 Lone Tree is ranked 9th.

 

Former Mediapolis Bulldog athlete, Jesse Ertz has been named the starting quarterback for Kansas State when they meet 8th ranked Stanford Friday night on the road.  Ertz started the 2015 season as the top quarterback but fell to an injury on the 2nd play of the season.
